Baseball has difficult week ahead

ATHENS - Georgia faces Ga. State and #8 San Diego this week. The Panthers are 2-2, opening up with a 11-9 loss to #3 Ga. Tech on Feb. 15 and then winning two of three from Albany last week. The Panthers probable starter will be senior RHP Romas Hicks while the Bulldogs will counter with senior LHP Mickey Westphal.

The Toreros are 7-2 including a season-opening sweep of defending national champion and then top-ranked Texas Feb. 3-5. Last week in Los Angeles, San Diego blanked Vanderbilt 10-0, trounced #30 Kansas 17-6 and fell to host #25 Southern California 8-3. San Diego's ace is sophomore Josh Butler who is 3-0 with an 0.00 ERA. He has not allowed a run in 20 innings this year and has 18 strikeouts and only two walks in three starts.

Top Five Bulldog Notes:

Georgia swept a three-game set from UNC Greensboro to open the season. The first two games were walk-off wins including 7-6 in 11 innings Friday followed by a four-run rally in the ninth Saturday. Senior RF Bobby Felmy (Sunbury, Penn.) delivered a two out, bases-loaded single Friday while senior LF Kyle Keen (Leesburg, Ga.) did the same on Saturday to give the Bulldogs the win.

Junior Jonathan Wyatt (Kennesaw, Ga.) posted an impressive opening series at the plate as well as in the field with his first three career starts at second base after two years in the outfield. Wyatt batted .500 (7-for-14) with four runs scored, 2 RBI and 2 SB plus a perfect FLDG% in 11 chances (9 PO, 2 A) to lead the Bulldogs.

Georgia had seven pitchers make their debut including six freshmen in the series. Overall, newcomers accounted for 18 of the 29 innings pitched. Freshman Nathan Moreau (Lilburn, Ga.) had the best outing of any Bulldog starter in the series (5 IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 4K) to earn a win Sunday. Fellow freshman Jason Leaver (Springfield, Ohio) notched a win in relief Saturday (3 IP, 4H, 1 R, 0BB, 2 K) in his debut.

Sophomore RHP Joshua Fields (Hull, Ga.) looked sharp in his debut as a closer in the season opener. He entered the game in the 9th with it tied 6-6 and tossed three shutout innings with four strikeouts and picked up the win as the Bulldogs won 7-6 in 11 innings.

Junior 1B Josh Morris (Cartersville, Ga.) missed the opening series with UNC Greensboro due to a lumbar strain (back). He had started every game in his first two seasons at UGA (123 straight) before being sidelined. An update on his status will be provided later this week.
