Profile 2003 - Jon Copper (LB)
When looking up middle linebacker in the football dictionary, one might very well find a picture of Roanoke VA native Jon Copper. Copper has every pre-requisite needed to be a star at the next level. He's 6-1 and 232 pounds with a good 4.7 forty time. His lateral movement is outstanding as displayed by his 4.34 shuttle. Strength? How about a 370 pounds state record bench press for his weight class. Tenacity? He finished runner up in the State Wrestling tournament in the Heavyweight division. Copper's abilities did not go unnoticed by the coaches in Virginia. He was named All-State on both offense and defense, and he was named the OL and DL of the year in his region.
Copper is going to be busy this summer taking in several camps. "I'm going to Oregon, North Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech this summer," said Copper. "My favorite schools right now are Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Navy, Maryland, and Michigan."
While Copper is a monster on the field and in the weight room, he has a much more spiritual side off the field. Copper lists being a member of Young Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and his church among his hobbies. "I want to receive a full scholarship to a division one school where I can compete for a national championship and where I can be involved in solid Christian ministry on campus."
A beast on the field and an ambassador off of it, those are the kinds of athletes that coaches and fans come to love as they work their way through their college careers. Jon Copper is one of those athletes.
