Owens talks spring ball

ATHENS – Jeff Owens spoke with Dean Legge for a short time about Georgia's spring practices.

Dean Legge: How has everything been so far for you this spring?

Jeff Owens: It has been going pretty good. We have been getting a lot of work in – working on a lot of fundamentals and getting our technique down.

As far as the starting job is concerned – you are the number one guy on the depth chart right now, how do you hold on to that for the next six months?

It's going to be tough. I know that I have to work hard and compete every day in practice and on and off the field. I am trying to get better every day and step my game up to a whole new level.

What's the most unique part of spring practice?

The rumors going around are that its going to be 18 periods of straight contact – all contact, no scout work – all out blast. Its going to be a new experience. A lot of hitting and contact…

You must love being physical…

I do…

But do you worry about 18 periods – that's two hours of hitting…

That's what I am here for – you have to do what you have to do.

What do you think about Kade Weston so far?

The first two days Kade came out and dominated pass rush. He's got that quick tick, and he's moving faster. I think mat drills helped us a whole lot. We are faster than we were last season.

Would you say that you are more in shape?

I think I am.

It does not seem like you were out of shape…

No, but I am two times quicker, faster, stronger – everything.
