Georgia has Recruited Me Hard Too

Wide receiver Deonte Thompson (5-11, 186, 4.3) of Belle Glade, Fla., claims to have 20 offers. He denies a leader, but said certain schools have definitely caught his eye. He also insists he is a 4.27 forty guy, based on timing at a Scout.com combine in April '05.

"Right now, I'd have to say that I'm really looking at Miami, USC, Notre Dame, Florida and Georgia," Deonte Thompson said. "They all have offered me scholarships and I have been talking with these coaches the most."

Thompson reports to have additional written offers from Michigan, LSU, West Virginia. Mississippi, South Carolina, Ohio State, Auburn and Alabama.

"I plan on taking an official visit to USC for sure, I'm just not sure when. I want to be at a school with a winning program, and I know I will be if I go there," he said. Coach (Pete) Carroll spoke with me about three weeks ago (mid-February) and gave me an offer. I've talked to the other coaches a lot too.

"I really like Miami because there's just a great atmosphere there," Thompson said. " I attended Junior Day there on March 4 and really learned a lot about how much tradition is there. I got to get a real personal feel for the program and talk with the coaches face-to-face. They told me I could come in and be a deep threat, maybe starting as a freshman."

According to the Scout.com five-star wide receiver, all 20 offers are in writing with the exception of USC. He said that Florida and Georgia have been recruiting him the hardest.

"Florida has been coming on the hardest. They were the first to come out with an offer, on September 1 of my junior year, " he said. "I really like Florida because I grew up here. I've been following the Gators my whole life and I know so much about the program. I get a letter or text-message from them almost everyday. They really are using the whole local angle on me.

"Georgia has recruited me hard too, " said the Glades Central High School star. "I really don't know that much about them yet. I have never even been there. I talk to the coaches all the time and I'm just really impressed with their enthusiasm and their straight-forward approach so far.

"Notre Dame is also a school I'm looking at right now. I really like their tradition in excellence. I've talked with the coaches a lot and they're really excited about me coming in as a deep threat."

Thompson said he plans on waiting until Signing Day to make his decision. "I want to play the recruiting process all the way through. I'm in no hurry. I want to take my time, take all my visits, and make sure that I am offered the best chance."

Thompson plans on attending 7-on-7 camps at Auburn, Alabama and North Carolina among others located on the East Coast. He plans to take all five allowable official visits, but does not know where or when yet. He has taken unofficial visits to both Florida and Miami already.

"I have great speed and hands and I'm a great at running my routes. Nobody can stop me. I need to focus on being more consistent on every play," Thompson said. "I need to run every play equally hard and I really working on that right now. I'm focusing a lot on the mental side of the game besides taking extra time in my drills."

Thompson said that distance is not a factor in making his decision and that no school really has an edge right now. "It's really too early to say I have a total leader. I'm just looking for a school that I will feel at home and comfortable with the whole environment and education. Who knows? That could be right here in my back yard or it could be across the country."
