Stopped Short(stop)

Although just a freshman, Gordon Beckham is one of the leaders of the Georgia baseball team. He is currently 2nd on the team in home runs with 10 and this past weekend he batted .583 (7 for 12) in a sweep vs South Carolina. This Thursday, Georgia faces in-state rival Georgia Tech. Tech won the 1st game in Atlanta, while Georgia won in the 2nd in Athens, Thursday it will be at Turner Field. A few days before the game the Bulldog shortstop talked to me.

Dave McMahon -- The team is on a roll, they have won 7 straight, although this is not a SEC game vs Georgia Tech, how big is it?

Gordon Beckham -- It means a lot for pride. It means a lot for our fans, too. We just got to go out there and play hard.

DM -- Have you ever played at Turner Field in a tournament or any other reason?

GB -- No, this will be my first time.

DM -- Have you ever seen a Georgia / Georgia Tech game there?

GB -- I saw one on TV and one in person... last year I was there.

DM -- You are currently batting 6 for 7 in two games vs Georgia Tech, do you put anything extra in your swing since it is Tech?

GB -- Not really, every game I pay hard. Sometimes it's just luck.

DM -- Living in Atlanta, were you a Dawg fan or a Yellow Jacket fan?

GB -- I grew up liking Georgia, Georgia Tech and South Carolina. I have family from all 3 schools.

DM -- You have been playing well lately, any changes?

GB -- I am seeing the pitches a lot longer. I am using my hands better, if I let my lower body do all the work I start getting in trouble.

DM -- The team is playing great, too...

GB -- We are playing with a lot more confidence. We know what we have to do and we are doing it.

DM -- Thank you for your time.

The Georgia vs Georgia Tech game was supposed to be played on Wednesday. It is now on Thursday at 7:00 pm at Turner Field.
