Got the Power

Georgia's Megan McAllister knows power. Last season, she broke a school record by hitting 16 home runs. This season she has already hit 15. On Wednesday, the Junior from Carlsbad, Calfornia was named First Team All-SEC. She currently leads the conference in Slugging Pct and is 2nd in home runs and runs batted in. She also knows average, right now she is batting .373. Starting on Thursday, Athens, Georgia will be the host of the SEC Softball Tournament and Megan tells me she is ready.

Dave McMahon -- The team fell just short of the SEC regular season title, how important is the SEC Tournament?

Megan McAllister -- It is important. It gives team an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Also this is the last time we will play these SEC teams this year.

DM -- How great is it having the SEC Tournament in Athens?

MM -- It should be a lot of fun. We will have our crowd, including "Lu's Lunatics" out there in full force.

DM -- You are great in both power and average this year, but you are especially good when it comes to hitting in the clutch... how hard is it to stay focussed when everyone is counting on you?

MM -- I approach every at-bat the same. I have the same routine each time. Every time I step in the box and I do what I am taught.

DM -- What is the team's strengths this year?

MM -- Our offense. Everyone in our lineup 1 through 9 is capable of getting the big rbi. Also our team speed is outrageous and our pitching and defense is very good. You have to have a combo of hitting, pitching and defense to win games and we have that.

DM -- Lu Harris-Champer has been the Bulldogs head coach for 6 years now. She has made Georgia one of nation's elite teams... what makes her so good?

MM -- She pushes you to your limits. She pushes everyone in a different way. She knows what it takes to get the most out of each of us.

DM -- You are 1 of 4 softball players currently on the roster from California... what is it about the University of Georgia that you all wanted to play here?

MM -- I love the University of Georgia and its history. Also the girls on the team get along so well. We are friends on and off the field.

DM -- Are there any more California girls headed our way?

MM -- Yes... we signed a real good pitcher from Murrieta, California named Kate Gaskill.

DM -- Thank you for your time and good luck in the SEC Tournament.

The SEC Tournament begins on Thursday at Noon. Georgia will play Arkansas at 5:00 pm.
