SEC Tourney - By the Numbers

The Georgia Baseball team plays Vanderbilt in the 1st round of the SEC Tournament today around 2:00 pm. Last year the Bulldogs missed qualifying for the tournament by 1/2 game. This year by winning 14 of the last 15 games, the Dawgs are the 3rd seed. The Bulldogs have never won the SEC Tournament, but were runner-ups three times, the last being in 1989. Here are some other facts you may not know.

This is the Dawgs 16th SEC Tournament Appearance and they are 20-30 in those games.

They have gone two and out 3 times... the first two times were 1987 and 1990... which were also the first two years they played in the College World Series.

They have never played Arkansas nor Ole Miss in the Tournament, but have played Vanderbilt (their first round opponent) 3 times... going 0-3 in those contests... the last time being in 2004.... but once again.. they made the College World Series that year.

The team they have defeated the most in the SEC Tournament has been Florida... the Dawgs are 7-4 against them... unfortunately, the Gators did not qualify this year... actually that is pretty funny.

Their first game in the SEC Tournament happened in 1978 vs Auburn. The game was played at Perry Field in Gainesville, Florida. The Tigers won 8-7 in 12 innings.

This is the 6th time the tournament has been played in Birmingham, including the last 5. Athens was the host back in 1987.

Former catcher Roger Miller won the 1989 Tournament MVP. He is 1 of 4 players to win the award when his team did not win the tournament.

Georgia has a 111-87 record vs Vanderbilt (first opponent) all-time, but was 1-2 vs the Commodores this year.

Georgia finished the regular season with a .308 team average, good for 2nd in the conference. Last year the Bulldogs had a .265 average. Vandy is 5th in the SEC with a .304 average. The Dawgs are also tied for 3rd in home runs and 4th in stolen bases.

In pitching, Georgia is 9th in the SEC in ERA. Vandy is 5th, Vandy is also leads the conference in strikeouts.

Vanderbilt won't be throwing their ace, David Price today. But that is too bad. Josh Morris hit a grand slam off of Price this year and Georgia ended up winning the game. Instead the Dawgs will be facing right-hander Matt Buschmann. Buschmann is 4-4 this year, but is 5th all-time at Vandy with 21 career wins. Against Georgia this year, he pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowed 8 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 8.

Georgia pitcher Mickey Westphal pitched pretty well against Vanderbilt this year. He got a no-decision, but threw 7 innings and allowed just 3 earned runs. Superstar closer Joshua Fields however struggled against the Commodores by going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA.

Some batters that have had success vs Vandy this year include Joey Side, Ryan Piesel, Josh Morris, Jason Jacobs and Gordon Beckham.

Side was 11-for-15 with 4 extra base hits vs the Commodores. Piesel was 6-for-13, Morris was 5-for-13, Jacobs was 5-for-14 and Beckham for 4-for-12.

Some of the Commodores to look out for are third baseman Pedro Alvarez. He won the SEC Freshman of the Year this year and got a game-winning RBI vs Georgia earlier this year. Shortstop Dominic de la Osa had 8 RBI vs the Dawgs this year including 7 in one game, 4 of them courtesy of a grand slam off of Nathan Moreau.

If Georgia wins they will face the winner of the South Carolina / Kentucky game... if they lose they will play the loser of that game.

Let's hope they win.
