Who is Sacred Heart?

The Georgia baseball team will be hosting a NCAA Regional during the NCAA Championships again. The other schools in their bracket include: Florida State, Jacksonville and and Georgia's first opponent, Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. But who is Sacred Heart?

Sacred Heart is located in Fairfield, Connecticut. It is the 2nd largest Catholic university in New England. It was founded in 1963. Around 5,600 students attend the university. They are known as the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart won the Northeast Conference Tournament. It was their first ever conference Tournament title. They defeated the #1 seed Central Connecticut to win it. There overall record is just 26-28, but they won their last 7 games. They lost their first 11 games of the season, but finished with a 14-9 conference record.

Sacred Heart's head coach is Nick Giaquinto. He is in his 18th season as the Pioneers Head Coach. He also was a former NFL football player and was a member of the Washington Redskins Super Bowl XVII championship team.

Junior Bobby McKee (sounds like a Janis Joplin song) is one of the team's leaders. The outfielder was named the Northeast Conference Tournament MVP. He batted .400 in the tournament. During the season, he batted .341... good enough for 2nd on the team. He also came in to pitch 4 times. Other hitting stars include Jeff Hanson, Jason Maiella and Dave Kaloyanides.

Georgia should be facing Sophomore right-hander Jay Monti. Monti got the win in the championship game last weekend. It was Monti's first relief appearance of the season. During the year, Monti had a 8-4 record with a 3.28 ERA. He also notched 83 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings. Chris Aldrich is the only other Pioneer pitcher with at least 6 wins.

The matchup between Georgia and Sacred Heart will be on Friday at Foley Field.

This is a double-elimation tournament.
