Who is Florida State?

Of the other 3 teams coming to Athens this weekend during the NCAA regional, it is Florida State which most of you know about. In 2001 in Athens, Georgia defeated FSU in the Super Regional 2 games to 1. Georgia first played the Seminoles back in 1951 and they have a 21-28 overall record against them. Here is a little more info on Florida State that you may not have known.

This is Florida State's 29th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 45th overall. Texas is the only school that has had more NCAA Appearances. FSU has played 178 NCAA Tournament games which is more than any other school. This is the first time since 1996 that they have not hosted a regional. They are 44-28 on the road during regionals. Florida State has also won 13 straight regional openers.

Head Coach Mike Martin has won 1,433 games in his career. He is one of eight coaches to win over 1,400 wins. He has 12 College World Series appearances. Martin had a .354 average as a centerfielder for the Seminoles from 1965 to 1966.

FSU is 42-19 this season. They are 11-8 on the road and 3-2 in neutral sites this year. The team average is .299, but they have a very good mixture of power and speed. On the season, they have 63 home runs and 98 stolen bases.

In the 2005 NCAA Tournament, FSU batted just .253.

Shane Robinson was named first-team All-ACC. He led the Noles with a .350 average. He also scored 74 runs and 31 stolen bases in 61 games played. The centerfielder has 30 multi-hit games this season and once had a 40-game hit streak during his career.

Jack Rye, Dennis Guinn, and Ryne Malone each have 12 home runs which leads FSU this season. Guinn is the RBI leader with 66. He also has 6 games this year in which he has drove home at least 4 runs.

The team ERA is 3.60. Luke Tucker has a 1.26 ERA and 8 saves in 25 relief appearances this season. Bryan Henry and Tyler Chambliss have both thrown over 100 innings this season and both have an ERA below 3.00. Chambliss also has 11 wins and 107 strikeouts.

Florida State will be very difficult to beat. Maybe Jacksonville or Sacred Heart can get rid of them for the Dawgs. That would be nice.
