Scouting Oregon State
Oregon State is 44-15 this season... good thing that Georgia is not playing them in Corvallis... The Beavers are 27-4 in home games.
Three things I would look out for...
1. Extra base hits They have a good team batting average (.303), but they don't hit a lot of home runs. In 2006, the Beavers have just 32 home runs. Only Cole Gillespie has more than 8 on the season (he has 12.) One thing that is scary is that they have 114 doubles and 29 triples. As for averages, Gillespie leads the way with a .388 average followed by John Wallace's .337 and Bill Rowe's .335.
2. Stolen bases They have good team speed. There are no 20-30 stolen base guys, but they have plenty a good runners. Gillespie is there once again leading the way with 15 thefts followed by Darwin Barney's 14. The team on a whole has 71 steals, their opponents on the other hand (or foot) has just 26. Beaver Opponents are just 26-for-51 this year trying to steal. This was a problem for Georgia vs Rice, it may be even tougher vs Oregon State.
3. Pitching Good news for Georgia is that they don't have to face Dallas Buck. Bad news is most likely they will be facing Junior Right-hander Jonah Nickerson. Nickerson is 11-4 this year with an ERA of 2.50 and has thrown 112 strikeouts. He is also Oregon State's all-time leader in strikeouts. In his last outing, Nickerson went 7 2/3 innings and allowed 0 runs to Stanford in the clinching game of their Super Regional. He has 3 complete games this season, so he can go the distance. If he needs help Kevin Gunderson is there. 17 Saves and a 2.34 ERA is what Gunderson brings. Oregon State's team ERA is 3.56 and they have held their opponents to a .238 batting average.
Oregon State is a very good team. They are the only team in this year's College World Series field that was also in last year's field. They are a hungry bunch as they are 0-5 career in College World Series action.
Oregon State had a school record 9 players get drafted earlier this month. One of those players could be Monday's pitcher Jonah Nickerson, who was drafted in the 7th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Expect anything from this team. After all earlier this year a rooster ran onto their ballpark and delayed the start of the game 15 minutes and one of the former players happens to be Steve Lyons. Steve "Psycho" Lyons you might remember is the guy who pulled down his pants on the field during a game and said that he forgot where he was.
Like I said anything can happen. By the way, Georgia has never faced Oregon State in baseball.
