Offensive line gets ready for start of season

ATHENS – Coaches, being coaches, always are going to complain about their lack of depth. However, offensive line coach Neil Callaway has an honest argument going into the Sept. 2 Western Kentucky game.

Callaway expects to play only six offensive linemen in that game, he said, and the same probably is true for the Sept. 9 game against South Carolina. The Bulldogs' five starters – tackles Michael Turner and Ken Shackleford, guards Chester Adams and Fernando Velasco and center Nick Jones – and backup guard Seth Watts are the only linemen currently ready to play, Callaway said.

"That's plenty. You only play five at a time right?" Coach Mark Richt said. "I hadn't thought about it. When I used to think about it, I would get nervous, but now I just don't think about it so I don't get nervous."

Watts can back up either guard position; Velasco will be the backup center, and Adams will move to tackle in case of injury at that spot.

Linemen Dan Inman and Ian Smith are suspended for the first two games of the season, and Zeb McKinzey doesn't expect to be back until at least the Sept. 16 UAB game due to a shoulder injury.
