2001-2006 Offensive Line Recruiting Review

ATHENS - Josh Kendall reviews all of Georgia's offensive line signees from 2001-2006.


Kareem Marshall (Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College, Grover, N.C.) – North Carolina native started five games in 2001 and 14 in 2002, all at tackle

James Redmond (Booker T. Washington High School, Atlanta) – Failed to qualify academically and went to Fork Union Military Academy before eventually attending Mississippi State, where he started last season

Dennis Roland (Bolivar High School, Missouri) – Signed as a project but eventually started 26 games, was signed as NFL free agent by Dallas Cowboys in April

Russ Tanner (Johnson County High School, Wrightsville) – The highest-rated lineman to sign in Richt's first class started 35 games at center


Josh Brock (Cartersville High School, Cartersville) – After overcoming a shoulder injury, Brock, who started 15 games as freshman and sophomore, was forced to quit the team in September of 2005 due to recurrent concussions

Max Jean-Gilles (North Miami Beach High School, Miami, Fla.) – The most high-profile lineman to sign with the Bulldogs during Richt's tenure started 40 games and was named All-American in 2005, was drafted in April by the Philadelphia Eagles

Daniel Inman (South View High School, Hope Mills, N.C.) – Has started 37 games for the Bulldogs and will return to lineup next week after serving the last of his two-game suspension for violating team rules

Antonio Mercier (Washington-Wilkes High School, Washington) – Diagnosed with diabetes during incoming tests and never practiced or played with team.

Bartley Miller (Marist, Atlanta) – Started nine games in 2003 before shoulder injury forced a redshirt season in 2004, quit the team in 2005 preseason due to chronic shoulder problems

Randall Swoopes (Clarke Central High School, Athens) – Redshirted in 2002 and spent 2003 at Georgia Military College due to disciplinary issues, quit team during spring practice of 2004


Trey Chandler (Buford High School, Buford) – Redshirted in 2003 then missed all of 2004 due to shoulder issues, left team during spring practice of 2005

Tommy Gainous (Cairo High School, Cairo) – Redshirted in 2003 and took medicaldisqualification prior to 2004 season due to knee injury

Nick Jones (Bowdon High School, Bowdon) – A lightly regarded recruit coming out of tiny Class A school, Jones has emerged into best offensive lineman of 2006; has started 29 games at center and guard

James Lee (Glades Central High School, Belle Glade, Fla.) – Redshirted in 2003 and never contributed in 2004 before transferring to South Carolina State prior to the 2005 season

Zeb McKinzey (Parkview High School, Lilburn) – Redshirted in 2003 and had limited role as backup in 2004 and 2005; has yet to see field in 2006 due to shoulder injury

Ken Shackleford (Villa Rica High School, Villa Rica) – Valuable backup in 2003 and 2004 saw his snaps fall off some in 2005; starting at split tackle this season

Fernando Velasco (Jefferson County High School, Wrens) – played mainly in backup role in 2003 and 2004 before taking mid-career redshirt season in 2005; starting split guard this season


Chester Adams (Luverne High School, Luverne, Ala.) – Recruited as tackle and played their in nine games in 2004 before being moved to guard prior to 2005 season; started first collegiate game last week against Western Kentucky

Seth Watts (Washington County High School, Sandersville) – A guard who was redshirted in 2004 and played a minor backup role in 2005; enters first two games of 2006 as only scholarship backup at any position along offensive line


Ian Smith (Cartersville High School, Cartersville) – Redshirted in 2005; expected to back up Nick Jones at center this year but has yet to play due to two-game suspension


Justin Anderson (Irwin County High School, Ocilla) – A USA Today first-team All-USA player was the highest-rated lineman since Jean-Gilles to sign with the Bulldogs, but he failed to qualify academically; will spend 2006 at Hargrave Military Academy and is expected to join Bulldog in 2007

Chris Davis (Jefferson High School, Jefferson) – The guard is the most likely of the 2006 class to play at this point but didn't dress out for Western Kentucky game

Josh Davis (Tylertown High School, Jayess, Miss.) – A mid-level recruit who will redshirt this year and try to gain weight before joining tackle rotation next year

Ben Harden (Perry High School, Perry) – Failed to qualify academically and will spend 2006 at Hargrave Military Academy before joining Georgia in 2007

John Miller (Woodland High School, Cartersville) – A tackle who enrolled early but never was able to compete for playing time due to shoulder injury that required surgery, will redshirt this year

Kevin Perez (Killian High School, Miami, Fla.) – A mid-level recruit who enrolled early and briefly competed for backup center job; now appears to be headed for redshirt season

*Smiths Station, Ala., native Reggie Weeks was an offensive lineman when a career-ending knee injury was diagnosed, but he was recruited as a defensive lineman. Current starting tackle Michael Turner was recruited as a tight end.
