Led by Vaughn Rivers' selection as the Big East special teams player of the week, the Mountaineers put three players on this week's conference awards list.
Rivers returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown in West Virginia
's 42-14 win at Mississippi State
on Oct. 7. It was the Mountaineers' first punt return for a touchdown since Antonio Lewis
accomplished the feat versus East Carolina
last season. Rivers finished the day with three punt returns for 65 yards (21.7 avg.). He also added three tackles on defense.
Joining Rivers on the Big East weekly awards were Steve Slaton and Eric Wicks, who earned a spot on the league's honor roll for their performancse against the Bulldogs.
Slaton, a sophomore running back, had
26 carries for 185 yards and a touchdown against MSU's heretofore stingy run defense. He totaled 208 total yards in the contest.
Wicks, a senior defensive back, had six tackles, including two for losses and two sacks in the win. He also picked off a pass in the end zone to thwart an MSU scoring effort.
