Richt not certain about AP ranking

Richt: Dawgs don't deserve high ranking...

Georgia coach Mark Richt says he hopes the nation's sportswriters know their college football. Georgia was picked No. 8 in The Associated Press preseason poll Saturday. It is the highest preseason ranking for the Bulldogs in the AP poll since a No. 7 ranking in 1982 — the last year Georgia won the Southeastern Conference.

Richt whistled and laughed when told of the ranking. "Eight, huh? I hope they're right,'' he said. "I hope they're right.'' Added Richt, who posted an 8-4 record in his 2001 debut season with Georgia: "We really haven't done anything to deserve that ranking. We'll just hook it up and play. ... It's just putting a pretty good sized target on your back.'' Georgia opens at home against Clemson on Aug. 31. The 7:45 p.m. game will be televised by ESPN.
