Kentucky Week: Tuesday News and Notes

ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's fall practices.

COMPARING NOTES: Richt called an old friend on Florida State's coaching staff last weekend. The Bulldogs were coming off their 21-14 loss to Florida, and the Seminoles had just been beaten 27-24 by Maryland to fall to 4-4 this season.

"It's almost like an unwritten rule, you don't call a coach after they get beat, but I knew how I was feeling and I knew how they were feeling," Richt said. "I was close enough friends with this guy to say, ‘Misery needs a little company once in a while.'"

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden -- who, at 76, is in his 31st year with the Seminoles -- has gotten pressure from boosters to step down, which Richt finds "ridiculous."

"It's not surprising because I understand college football and the passion of the fans," he said. "People get emotional, but to think that anybody in authority would put any credence in those kind of things would be crazy in my opinion. Bobby Bowden is maybe one of the finest coaches in the history of college football. He took Florida State's program from getting ready to be extinct to one of the powers in the country and did it for years and year and years. I think it's pretty ridiculous to think that he should have to go through that type of stuff, but, you know, it's about winning."

Bowden is the all-time wins leader among college football coaches with 363 victories.

BAD NUMBERS: Georgia's record isn't impressive under any light, but it's particularly disappointing considering its cakewalk schedule. The Bulldogs have the 90th most difficult schedule in the nation this year, based on teams already played. The Bulldogs' nine foes have a combined record of 25-31.

By contrast, the three teams remaining on the Bulldogs' schedule have a combined record of 16-7, giving Georgia the 13th-toughest remaining schedule in the country.

THIS AND THAT: Redshirt freshman offensive lineman John Miller has been kicked off the team. "He had a violation of team rules," Richt said. Miller, a 6-foot-6 native of Cartersville who was slated to play tackle, was one of four true freshmen linemen sitting out this season. … Georgia's 1-3 record in October is its worst since 1990, when Ray Goff's second team also went 1-3 in the month on the way to a 4-7 season. … Danny Ware expects to return kickoffs again Saturday, but assistant coach Tony Ball said that could change based on pre-game warm-ups.
