Felton Suspends Two

ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs will open their 2006-07 basketball season with an exhibition game this Friday against West Georgia. They¹ll play the Wolves short-handedly, however, because of suspensions to juniors Takais Brown and Sundiata Gaines, head coach Dennis Felton said Wednesday.

Brown, a transfer from Southeastern Illinois College, has been suspended indefinitely for his failure to comply with the team¹s academic standards, according to Felton. Gaines, meanwhile, will be serving a 1-game suspension for violating NCAA rules regarding participation in a summer-league game.

Regarding Brown¹s suspension, Felton said, ³We are first and foremost in the business of educating, and our players have to be students that learn, grow and earn degrees. Takais is not doing all of the things he needs to be doing as a student. Therefore, he must devote all of his time to his classwork right now and come to understand its importance. And I am going to do everything within my power to give him every opportunity to succeed.²

Gaines, Georgia¹s two-year starter at point guard, played lastsummer in a league that was fully sanctioned by the NCAA. He did not, however, complete the necessary administrative process to obtain clearance to play in this league, which was held in his hometown area of New York City.

Gaines will be fully eligible to resume competition when the Bulldogs open the regular season Friday, Nov. 10 against Southern University.
