Coming Home

Mike Mercer played his high school ball at South Gwinnett High School, not too far away from The Arena at Gwinnett Center. That's where Georgia defeated Gonzaga 96-83 to move to 7-1 this season. Mercer came into the game 3rd in the SEC in scoring averaging 17.6 points per game. He did even better on Saturday, scoring 19 points. He also added 7 boards and 4 assists. After the game I talked to him.

Dave McMahon -- Is this Georgia's biggest win since you have been here?

Mike Mercer -- Definitely

DM -- The team shot 62.9% from the floor in the first half, y'all couldn't miss...
MM -- We all were hot. One shot I made was lucky though. I am not complaining... I will take them.

DM -- Gonzaga made it close late in the 1st half, but Georgia started the 2nd half with an 11-0 run...

MM -- At the half we tried to pin point our mistakes. We came out strong and rebounded when we had to.

DM -- Midway through the 2nd half, you and the rest of the team struggled shooting-wise, but you kept getting offensive rebounds... is this something Coach Felton stresses?

MM -- It seemed like fatigue sat in and we couldn't hit them in the middle of both halves, but we fought hard. Last year we might not have been able to do it, but this year we have done better.

DM -- Georgia has scored a lot of points this season, but most were against bad teams, but how impressive was scoring 96 points against a team like Gonzaga?

MM -- That is the way we play. We run and score a lot. We feel like we can score 90 points a game...

DM -- Maybe now some of the pollsters will look at this team...

MM -- We don't worry about that... We felt a little slighted when we saw a preview of this game and all the talk was about Gonzaga and nothing about us.

DM -- This crowd was pretty loud...

MM -- Yes. It felt like a sellout.

DM -- Maybe it can carry over to a game in Athens...

MM -- I think it can.
