Gym Dogs Open 2007 with Win

ATHENS – The top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Gym Dogs opened their 2007 slate in impressive fashion, cruising past No. 8 Stanford, 197.375-194.600, Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum in front of a crowd of 9,002.

The score of 197.375 topped last year's opening mark of 195.700 and is the highest total of any Gym Dog team in history in a season-opening meet.

"This was the best opening score for any Gym Dogs team and maybe this year from any team in the country," said head coach Suzanne Yoculan, "so I'm definitely pleased with what I saw. This team is hungry for a third national title."

Junior Katie Heenan was the meet's top all-around competitor with a 39.550, as the gymnast recorded a 9.925 on both vault and floor. Sophomore Tiffany Tolnay followed with an all-around effort of 39.325.

Georgia began the meet by notching a 49.350 on the vault behind six marks of 9.825 or better. Heenan led all Gym Dogs with a 9.925 followed by Kelsey Ericksen and Marcia Newby who both earned 9.875s.

Stanford finished the uneven bars with a 49.175, led by Liz Tricase's 9.925. The Cardinal trailed by just .200 after one rotation, but the Gym Dogs increased their lead to a full point after a stellar performance on the bars. Courtney Kupets and Ericksen both grabbed 9.925s to lead the squad. Heenan brought in a 9.900 as did freshman Grace Taylor in her first collegiate gymnastics routine.

Georgia continued its trend of scoring more than a 49.000 on its routines as the Gym Dogs recorded a 49.325 on the beam in the third rotation. The team had to overcome a fall by Ericksen in the first slot and did so by notching five scores of 9.800 or better. Courtney Kupets' career-best beam routine of 9.975 highlighted the event along with freshman Courtney McCool's 9.900.

The Gym Dogs closed out the meet with a 49.200 on floor. Ericksen's meet-leading 9.950 on the even tied a career-high for the senior.

The Gym Dogs travel to face Kentucky on Friday in Lexington and have two more meets on the road before returning to Athens on Jan. 27 for a dual meet with Florida.
