Some Things You Might Not Know

This is the time of year where almost every sport is in the news. Both basketball teams are playing about twice a week. Baseball starts next week, gym dogs are at full force, swimming is wrapping up and tennis and golf are about to get started. Oh yes, and there is something called "Signing Day" this wednesday. I know most of you know all that, but here are a few things you might not know...

There hasn't been too many verbal commitments lately. The latest one was Drew Butler, son of the great Kevin Butler. Georgia has had many father-and-son combinations in the past. The 2002 signing class had four players whose fathers played for the Bulldogs. Some of them panned out and some did not. Those players include: Tony Taylor, Joe Tereshinski III, Bryan McClendon and Randall Swoopes.

The Bulldogs struggled on Saturday against Vanderbilt scoring just 61 points and shooting 38.9 percent. The 38.9 percent is bad, but in recent times Georgia has either been real good or really really bad in field goal pct when playing at Vanderbilt.

2007: 38.9 percent
2006: 53.6
2005: 29.3
2004: 28.3
2003: 51.7
2002: 50.0
2001: 53.6
2000: 56.5
1999: 52.4

Lady Bulldogs' star Tasha Humphrey got her 31st career double-double on Thursday against LSU. That is a lot, but not close to a record. Former Georgia great Janet Harris holds the Georgia and the SEC record for double-doubles in a career with 78. The Lady Bulldogs also claim two triple-doubles in their history (Teresa Edwards and Tracy Henderson). The men's basketball team has never had a triple-double.

The baseball team begins this Friday with a rematch against the defending champion Oregon State Beavers.

Georgia won last year's season opener 7-6 in a thrilling 11-inning game against UNC-Greensboro. The last time Georgia lost an opener was in 2003 against Gardner-Webb. If it offense you want then the year 1977 is when you wanted to be. In their first 3 games, Georgia outscored their opponents 67-10 with wins of 15-0, 22-3 and 30-7. 1980 wasn't bad either, those first 3 games, Georgia outscored their opponents 49-9. It will tough to score anywhere near that. Oregon State has already played 4 games this season and has a team ERA of 1.59 which includes a team no-hitter in their first game of the season.

The men's tennis team begins its play on Sunday. Coach Manuel Diaz has 404 wins in his first 18 seasons as head coach. That is a lot, but if he wants to hold the school record... at his current pace he will have it in the year 2021. The great Dan Magill has 706 career wins. If you wondering that is why the area code in Athens is 706, to honor the great Dan Magill... OK, I am only kidding about that last part.
