A New Start

Last season the men's tennis team came 1 match short of winning the national championship for the 5th time in the team's history. This year's team does not want that to happen again. One of the team's stars is senior Matic Omerzel. He had a very easy time on Sunday as Georgia won their 1st match of the season. Matic won his doubles match 8-1 and in singles 6-1,6-3. After the match I talked to him.

Dave McMahon -- Good way to start the season...

Matic Omerzel -- Definitely, I was a little nervous out there until I got my rhythm back, but after I got to a quick start I started to feel good.

DM -- How much have you improved since you first got here?

MO -- I developed a lot. Coach Diaz has helped me a lot. I am a lot smarter. When I was a freshman I would just smack the ball. I am also a lot stronger now.

DM -- Last year you were the SEC Indoors Champion in doubles with Luis Flores, now you have a new doubles partner, Travis Helgeson, is it hard to play with someone new?

MO -- We played together in the fall. We have good chemistry. Last year I played with Luis who was left-handed, this year I play with Travis who is left-handed. We have practiced a lot together who know where each of us is going to be.

DM -- What worked so well for you in singles?

MO -- I was consistant. I didn't miss a lot. I put a lot of pressure on my opponent.

DM -- What do you still need to work on?

MO -- My first serve percentage, but overall my volleys. I also feel I need to come to the net more.

DM -- You are very aware on how the season ended last year, especially since you are a senior and this is your last year, do you use last year as motivation for this year?

MO -- I was the player who lost the last match. I felt so bad I did not grab a racket for 2 months after that match. I didn't want to think about tennis. But now it is a new season and a new start.

Overall this season, Matic is currently ranked #65 in the nation.

He is 11-4 this season in singles and 9-2 in doubles matches when teammed with Travis Helgeson.
