Sylvester would like to play close to home

Union Grove running back/linebacker Steven Sylvester will be one of the top players on the in the class of 2008. He updates his recruiting so far.

Steven Sylvester has moved around his entire life: from Alabama to Washington to Georgia. Now he's ready to settle down and figure out where he will play football for the next few years of his life.

"South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Florida State are the schools that have offered so far," he said. Sylvester visited Tech last weekend for that program's junior day.

He's got the Jackets, Bulldogs, Virginia Tech and Florida State at the top of his list right now. But, he admits, leaving the state that he's grown to love would be hard to do.

"It would be nice to play close to home," he said.

Sylvester says he ended the season with more than 800 yards and five touchdowns while running the ball. But he seems destined to be a linebacker in college, which is what Georgia's Willie Martinez is recruiting him for.

"Coach Martinez texts me all of the time," the McDonough native said.

Still, Georgia Tech's pull on young Sylvester could be significant. Two of his close friends from his hometown, former teammate Kyle Jackson and Henry County product Chris Jackson are headed to downtown Atlanta. Kyle signed last week while Chris became Tech's first commitment for the class of 2008 in December. The two Jacksons are not related.

But, Sylvester says, unlike his friends he's not ready to commit anytime soon.

"I'm not sure when I'm going to commit," he said. "But the earliest I will commit would be the end of the summer."
