Fund set up for Lemon after tragedy

ATHENS – Georgia's athletic department received permission from the NCAA on Monday to pursue setting up a trust fund for Bulldog football player and Stratford graduate Michael Lemon and his younger brother Marquez.

Their mother, 39-year-old Phaba Lemon, died last week at their home in Lizella, and her fiance, Herbert Hart Jr., has been charged with murder.

Due to strict and lengthy NCAA rules about compensating student-athletes, Georgia had to seek permission from the governing body of college sports before attempting to help Lemon financially.

People interested in making a donation can make out a check to the University of Georgia Athletic Association and write "The Lemon Support Fund" in the memo line. The checks can be sent to the UGAAA c/o Eric Baumgartner, P.O. Box 1472, Athens, Ga., 30603. Donations are not tax deductible.

Most members of the Georgia football team and coaching staff attended Phaba Lemon's memorial service on Sunday at Stratford.
