Georgia Recruiting Overview: Quarterbacks

ATHENS – In a week-long series of articles, Dean Legge takes a look at Georgia's recruiting; today, the quarterbacks.

Overview: Dynamic and with a right arm full of power, Matthew Stafford is better than people outside of Georgia realize. He's charismatic and is a leader. His turnaround in 2006 was Georgia's turnaround in 2006. He can lead Georgia to the SEC title both of the next two years. Joe Cox is a capable backup who has proved that he can win – even in dire straights. Blake Barnes is finishing out his career in Athens and likely will not play a significant role in his final years.

Total quarterbacks: 3 in 2007; 4 in 2008

Starter: Matthew Stafford

Backups: Joe Cox and Blake Barnes

Signed in 2007: Logan Gray

Won't be here in 2008: None

Committed for 2008: None

2008 Offers: Star Jackson (FL)

What it all means: It all means that Stafford has at least this year and next as the starter. He may have another year – if not, Joe Cox will line up at starter and be forced to hold Logan Gray off. Georgia may not offer a true quarterback this year. Obviously the Dawgs like their quarterback situation – they have perhaps the best young quarterback in the country. They have two quarterbacks his age or younger – why sign a signal caller this year?
