Wyatt Drafted By Cubs; More Signees Picked

ATHENS - Georgia senior outfielder Jonathan Wyatt was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 13th round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player draft early Friday along with three more Bulldog signees.

Wyatt, a 5-10, 180-pound native of Kennesaw, Ga., was a starter on two College World Series teams and was one of the greatest Bulldog hitters in the postseason. He batted .392-3-17 in 27 postseason games including .316 at the CWS. For the second year in a row, he led the Bulldogs in hitting and batted .323-6-37 with 16 stolen bases in 2007. He finished with a .328 career batting average, 12 home runs, 103 RBI and 42 stolen bases. He ranks fifth in school history with 222 games played including 172 starts. In 2007, Wyatt led all Southeastern Conference outfielders with a perfect fielding percentage in 164 total chances.

"It feels good, and I'm honored to get the opportunity to play professional baseball," said Wyatt. "It was an awesome feeling to get the call, and it's one of the reasons I came to college. I wanted to get better as a baseball player and get an education. Last year, I got some calls on draft day but I decided to come back for my senior year. I feel like I got better, and I got closer to my degree and it worked out. I came out a winner on both ends."

A trio of Bulldog signees were drafted in the early-going Friday as the draft continues in to the night with 50 rounds. Shortstop/pitcher Ryan Acosta (Clearwater HS, Safety Harbor, Fla.) was selected in the 12th round by the Cubs; right-handed pitcher Justin Grimm (Virginia HS, Bristol, Va.) went in the 13th round to Boston and right-handed pitcher Will Harvil (Young Harris JC, Smyrna, Ga.) was selected in the 17th round by Tampa Bay.

On Thursday, Bulldog junior right-handed pitcher Joshua Fields was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the second round (69th overall). Also, Georgia signee Ben Revere (OF, Lexington Catholic HS, Lexington, Ky.), was selected in the First Round (28th overall) by the Minnesota Twins while Bulldog signee Isaiah Froneberger (LHP, Forest Park HS, Forest Park, Ga.), was drafted in the fourth round (132nd overall) by the Colorado Rockies.
