Beckham Named Cape Cod League All-Star Starte

ATHENS – University of Georgia's Gordon Beckham will be the starting shortstop for the East squad in the 44th-annual Cape Cod League Summer All-Star game Saturday in Wareham, Mass., the league announced recently.

Beckham, an Atlanta native and rising junior, leads the league with eight home runs and 26 RBI to go with a .321 batting average. The 6-0, 180-pound Beckham has helped the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox maintain first place in the Eastern Division and the league's best record at 22-9-1.

The 45th annual CCBL All-Star game will begin at 6 p.m. on July 28 at Wareham's Spillane Field and be broadcast live on National Public Radio. Also, NESN-TV will air a replay of the game on Monday, July 30 at 7 p.m. The CCBL is widely considered the top collegiate baseball summer league in the country with 198 former Cape Leaguers currently in the major leagues.

A couple of rising sophomore Bulldogs were named All-Stars in their respective leagues earlier this summer. Infielder Rich Poythress, a 6-4, 236-pound native of Grovetown, Ga., made the Coastal Plain League All-Star team as a member of the Thomasville (N.C.) HiToms. He is batting .331 with a league-leading 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 39 starts. As a freshman for the Bulldogs last season, Poythress overcame a serious knee injury, played in 45 games and batted .282-3-24. Meanwhile, Dean Weaver pitched one inning in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game this past Sunday in North Adams, Mass. The 6-3, 192-pound right-hander from Douglasville, Ga., ranks among the league leaders with 40 strikeouts and only eight walks in 40.1 innings pitched for the Keene (N.H.) Swamp Bats. Weaver is 3-2 with a 2.90 ERA in seven starts this summer.
