Smith retires; Barnes & Chandler suspended

ATHENS - The University of Georgia welcomed its football student-athletes to campus Friday as they officially reported in preparation for the start of fall football camp. All players expected to report arrived.

On Friday, the team's activities included physicals, meetings, freshmen orientation and a team dinner. Fall camp begins Saturday following the team's first media session of the season. Georgia will practice in helmets and shorts for the first five sessions.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt announced Friday that redshirt sophomore center Ian Smith of Cartersville has decided to end his football career due to medical reasons but would remain in school. He also said that junior quarterback Blake Barnes and junior tight end Tripp Chandler will serve a one game suspension for an off-field incident earlier this summer.

The first set of two-a-day practices will be Thursday, Aug. 9, and the team will go in full pads that morning.The fall semester begins Thursday, Aug. 16. The annual Fans Picture Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 18 at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs, ranked 13th in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, open their season at home against Oklahoma State Sept. 1. Kickoff against the Cowboys is slated for 6:45 p.m., and the game will be televised live by ESPN2.
