Georgia head coach Mark Richt said he was pleased with the team¹s effort.
³It was a high-energy scrimmage, and I¹m glad we went later in the evening and that probably helped,² said Richt. ³The number one defense was dominant, they played great Georgia team defense. The number one offense had only one touchdown drive and one long drive that ended with a field goal.²
Richt added that it was not a lot of fun for the offense Saturday with a couple of projected starters on the offensive line out with injuries (tackle Chester Adams and guard Scott Haverkamp both with an ankle sprain).
³We¹ve got some issues up front with Chester and Scott out for a while,² said Richt. ³We¹ve got a senior center and four freshmen including three true freshmen out there and that¹s our number one unit. It¹s rare for true freshmen to play up front and we may play three or four.²
The scoring highlights from the scrimmage included the following: a 36-yard field goal by Brandon Coutu; a 44-yard field goal by Andy Bailey; a nine-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Tony Wilson and a three-yard pass from Logan Gray to Kris Durham. Defensively, middle linebacker Marcus Washington led the team with seven stops while Akeem Dent and Dannell Ellerbe had six apiece. Also, Ellerbe had 1.5 sacks while Kelin Johnson forced a fumble, which was recovered by Jeff Owens. Also with the ball placed at the one yard line, a host of tacklers led by Kade Weston and Corvey Irvin came up with a safety.
The Bulldogs will take Sunday off and then return to practice on Monday with another two-a-day session planned.
