South Carolina Week:Monday Practice Report

ATHENS – The Georgia football team began preparations for its Southeastern Conference opener by working out for approximately 90 minutes on Monday at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

The Bulldogs are 1-0 following their 35-14 victory against Oklahoma State last week. South Carolina, the Bulldogs' opponent this week, is also 1-0 after dispatching Louisiana-Lafayette 28-14.

"It was a good first game for us," said tailback Thomas Brown, who scored two of the Bulldogs' touchdowns. "We enjoyed it on Saturday, but on Sunday our focus turned to South Carolina. They are an always- tough opponent, and this game usually goes down to the wire."

"It's nice to be 1-0, but it's only the beginning," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "It was a great start, but we've got a long way to go. We played well because we prepared well, and we've got to make sure we do that again this week. We have a lot of respect for South Carolina and Coach (Steve) Spurrier, and we have to really focus on what we need to do this week."

Richt announced the captains for Saturday's game will be Antavious Coates (overall), Fernando Velasco (offense), Marcus Howard and Brandon Miller (defense), and Thomas Brown (special teams). Coates is a South Carolina native whose career was cut short by his fourth ACL injury recently.

Before practice on Monday, Velasco was chosen as the SEC Lineman of the Week.
