ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's loss to South Carolina.

INJURY UPDATE: Starting safety Kelin Johnson did not play in the second half due to a rib injury. The extent of his injury was unknown at press time for this edition.

EARLY HELP: Georgia's first two first downs came thanks to South Carolina cornerback Carlos Thomas. The junior from College Park was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct twice on the first series of the game. Each time, the Bulldogs faced a fourth down.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was livid after the second call, but his team escaped unhurt because Brandon Coutu missed a 48-yard field goal wide left to cap the drive.

BUSTED PLAY: The Bulldogs tried to get Peach County's A.J. Bryant involved in an early trick play. With 1:24 left in the first quarter, quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a lateral pass to Bryant, who was an all-state quarterback in high school. Bryant was supposed to throw theball back across the field to Knowshon Moreno, but wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi missed a block and Bryant was tackled immediately after he caught the ball.

Bryant was taken down awkwardly and limped off the field. He walked away from the trainer's table under his own power but did not return to the game due to a left knee injury.

WHAT HAPPENED?: Georgia coach Mark Richt had his turn with the officiating crew after Spurrier was done. The Bulldogs appeared to get a break when an official threw a flag after Gamecocks wide receiver Freddie Brown blocked linebacker Dannell Ellerbe at the ankles as quarterback Blake Mitchell scrambled.

Ellerbe appeared to be hurt on the play but got up quickly and returned to action. While Ellerbe was being looked at, the officials waved off the flag.

Richt called a timeout in order to have a discussion with the officials but the non-call stood. South Carolina eventually punted on the drive.

THIS AND THAT: Columbus native D. J. Jones was the Bulldogs' letterman honorary captain. Jones appeared i n the three Sugar Bowls and the Cotton Bowl. He was suspended for the first game of the year for an offseason arrest but that was only a one-game suspension. … On the one-year anniversary of his death, Erk Russell's name was added to Georgia Southern's list of retired jerseys in a game-day ceremony.
