Ole Miss Week: Wednesday News and Notes

ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's fall practices.

SUPER SUB: Sophomore offensive lineman Vince Vance is cramming to learn a new position this week but happy just the same at the prospect of more playing time.

Vance, a transfer from Georgia Military College, played guard last week for the first time in his football career. After two days of practice at the position, he played "decent" in his first outing, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said.

Vance was force into the spot by an ankle injury to Scott Haverkamp. Now he is the sixth man on Georgia's offensive line regardless of what position needs to be filled. (If center Fernando Velasco is injured, guard Chris Davis would go to center, and Vance would take Davis' spot.)

The biggest difference between guard and tackle is guards face stronger defensive linemen and have to be more precise in their technique, Vance said.

"If you're out there at tackle, sometimes you can get away from your technique just a little bit and still get away with it," Vance said, "but down at guard, you have to be on your Ps and Qs."

Haverkamp has a walking boot on his right foot and won't be ready to play until at least the Oct. 6 Tennessee game.

JUNIOR JUMP: Junior wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi had pedestrian numbers in the Alabama game (two catches for 23 yards), but it was the best game of his career, according to his coaches.

"I think he changed the level of his game," Coach Mark Richt said. "He played with a focus I've not seen on the guy, and he did it for 60 minutes."

After one play, Alabama's trainers had to help a player who Massaquoi had blocked off the field, wide receivers coach John Eason said.

"I guess (it is) just maturity," Massaquoi said. "As you get older, you learn how to do things more effectively. I'm having fun, I'm having a lot of fun right now."
