Ellerbe to try new helmet

ATHENS – Dannell Ellerbe's family and friends in North Carolina have gotten to see a lot more of him on television this season.

And that's a good and a bad thing for Georgia's senior linebacker. Ellerbe is the No. 15 Bulldogs' leading tackler this season with 27 stops, a few of which have come without his helmet.

Ellerbe's helmet has come off more than 10 times this season, he estimated. It's scary at times to be in the middle of the action without a helmet, he said, but he admitted, "Most of the time I'm hoping the TV camera is on."

"Everybody at home will be calling saying we saw you on TV, we really saw you," he said.

Ellerbe is switching helmets for this week's game in hopes of keeping his hat on. He's already had to switch practice helmets after that one came off during preseason camp, and he collided with Brandon Miller, resulting in stitches above his left eye.

Ellerbe insists he is strapping his helmet properly, but his teammates wonder.

"He might be trying to get a little face time," linebacker Marcus Washington said, "you know Dannell."
