2008 Spring Practice: Day 1 News and Notes

ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's spring practices.

SETTLING IN: Redshirt freshman Aron White hopes his collegiate future is at tight end and last month's departure of tight end Na Derris Ward probably will make that a reality. White split time at tight end and wide receiver last year because his body had yet to grow enough to play tight end full time, but that's where he'll work most of the time this spring.

"Aron has really been wanting to move in that direction and his body has been moving in that direction," Richt said. "He will be in the tight end meeting room. He will be working all the tight end fundamentals. He's going to prove that he's capable of being a complete tight end this spring I hope."

The 6-foot-4 White weighs 230 pounds and hopes to weigh 235 or 240 by the fall, he said. Trying to learn both positions last year was difficult, he said.

"I think that now that I have a concrete, set path, it will really open things up for me as far as learning the offense," he said. "I'm a lot more confident in my decision making now."

INJURY UPDATE: Offensive lineman Tanner Strickland (high ankle sprain), linebacker Darius Dewberry, wide receiver Demiko Goodman, and defensive end Justin Houston all were out or limited Monday.

Strickland is wearing a walking boot and isn't expected to be back at least until the team returns from spring break. Fullback Brannan Southerland (foot) and defensive tackle Brandon Wood (Achilles tendon) are out for spring.

SPRING SCHEDULING: The Bulldogs are the second SEC team to begin spring practice, behind only Auburn, which started last Thursday. The final SEC team to begin spring workouts will be Arkansas, which is scheduled to take the field for new head coach Bobby Petrino on April 3.

THIS AND THAT: Several members of Penn State's coaching staff visited Athens on Monday and watched the Bulldogs conduct drills during practice. … The breakout sessions for Georgia's coaching clinic on Thursday have been moved to 3:30 p.m. at the Classic Center in Athens. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. and the team's practice will begin at 8:50 p.m. Former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr will speak Friday morning.
