Spring Practice Day 7: News and Notes

ATHENS - Josh Kendall's news and notes from Georgia's spring practices.

DEWBERRY OUT FOR SPRING: Darius Dewberry, still bothered by a groin injury he suffered last year against Georgia Tech, will have surgery next week to relieve stress on a tendon in his groin area. The procedure will cause him to miss the rest of spring practice, but he should be full speed by the fall, Richt said.

"If everything goes right, he should be back by early summer," Richt said.

IMPORTANT DAY: The Bulldogs will hold the first of three spring scrimmages today, and it's the first real chance for players to start making an impact on the depth chart.

"Every practice is important, no about it, but there is more emphasis on what you do in a scrimmage," Richt said. "A lot of guys kind of break out in a scrimmage. Certain guys are playmakers, and that's what we want to see."

KIND GESTURE: Linebacker Darryl Gamble has decided to wear Marcus Washington's No. 44 jersey for the remainder of spring practice, he said Friday. Washington announced earlier this week that he will sit out this season as a redshirt in hopes of finally healing a nagging shoulder injury.

SEVERAL STANDOUTS: Redshirt freshman wide receiver Walter Hill and redshirt freshman quarterback Logan Gray had a good day of practice Friday, Richt said. Hill had a one-handed touchdown catch during a drill.

"He gathered himself and boxed (the cornerback) out and made the catch," Richt said.

Richt also praised Houston County native Quintin Banks, a sophomore safety, and linebacker Gamble for their work Friday.
