2008 Media Days: Legge's Look at Florida

BIRMINGHAM – Here's a look at the day Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer and the Gators had at the SEC's annual Media Day event. Florida finished third in the SEC East and went to the Capital One Bowl last season.

Last season: 9-4
Last game vs. Georgia: 42-30 win
Series Record: Georgia leads 47-37-2
Most memorable Georgia win: 1980 – Buck Belue to Lindsey Scott; enough said. (2007 is a close second)
Most painful Georgia loss: 2002 – Georgia loses to Florida; it was the Dawgs' only blemish of the season. Georgia would likely have played for the national title against Miami instead of Ohio State.
Starters returning: 16

Best player: Tim Tebow
Biggest Weakness: Secondary – specifically depth at safety
2008's big question: Will Tebow stay healthy the entire season?

Inside the numbers vs. Georgia (as seen in the Dawg Post Season Preview):
If Mark Richt's teams have scored 20 points or more against the Gators they have won (2004 and 2007). If they have not scored more than 20 points they have lost (2001-03, 05-06).

Recruiting Implications:
Picking up. In years gone by Georgia got only scraps left by Miami, Florida State and Florida south of the border. It was impossible for the Dawgs to get players to leave home to play for the red and black. That trend has changed of late. Quarterback Aaron Murray's commitment seems to signal that Florida prospects are open to Georgia again. Murray, Mr. Football in Florida in 2007, picked Georgia over Florida. The recruiting world saw it coming as the announcement loomed, but from January to early April everyone thought he was Florida's to lose – and they lost him. Why does it matter? Because Florida wanted Murray and Georgia got him. The Gators recruit Georgia hard, but they've not gotten a player with Murray's hype out from underneath Georgia in years. Notable Georgians on the Florida Roster: Six players from Georgia are on the Florida roster – Jermaine Cunningham makes the most noise of the bunch. Notable Floridians on the Georgia Roster: Tony Wilson, Bryan Evans, Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens.

Last year's prediction: Win. This game has not been the bellwether for Georgia's winning the SEC, but it's beyond old watching Georgia give a pitiful offensive effort south of the border.
Pitiful no more – Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno slashed and then pounded the Gators in a 42-30 win. Georgia finally had life in Jacksonville.

SEC Media Day's quotes to note:

"We've got this guy, Tim Tebow… he's pretty good," Phil Trautwein on his quarterback.

"I heard that, too. I believe it, I guess. I think he's a great player," Trautwein on Tebow again.

"I was on the sideline and I had no clue what was going on. It got me kind of mad. I think we all got kind of mad. I think Coach brought us in and told us: Calm down… we will get them" and then they beat us. I think I have watched that over 100 times," Trautwein on Georgia's dance party during the Dawgs win over Florida last season.

"I will be the first to admit… I am horrible, but I don't care – I like singing," Tim Tebow on singing at practice and around the program.

"A little bit, yeah," Tebow on if the 2007 Georgia game left a bad taste in his mouth.

"I think that's old news now," Florida head coach Urban Meyer on Georgia's celebration last year.

"Enough to win the game. If he is our best ball carrier then he will carry is a lot," Meyer on how many carries he will give to Tebow this season.

"Defensively we have a ways to go, but we have the talent," Meyer on the Gators' defense.

"I guess we were real bored with the SEC schedule, so we've got Miami, Hawaii and Florida State," Meyer on the schedule.

Legge's must-win game: Georgia (JAX) on November 1st
