2008 Fall Camp: Day Three News and Notes

ATHENS - David Hale's news and notes from Georgia's fall camp.

THREE FOR FREE: Richt announced Wednesday three players had been awarded scholarships recently. Punter Brian Mimbs was put on scholarship last month, and both free safety Andrew Williams and fullback Benjamin Boyd were given scholarships this week.

Williams had been on scholarship last season, but as a sixth-year senior, Richt wasn't sure if one would be available for Williams again this season.

"It worked out it was available, and he deserved it," Richt said.

In addition to the scholarship, Boyd earned additional praise from Richt for his efforts at practice.

The senior is transitioning from linebacker to fullback this season, and got his first taste of action during Wednesday's practice.

"(He) kind of christened himself picking up a block at fullback, which was very nice," Richt said.

CAMP INJURIES: Freshman wide receiver A. J. Green was back in action Wednesday after missing practice the day before with a hip flexor injury. Richt said Green was not at full speed, but did participate in several drills.

"The more he learns and the healthier he gets, we'll get a chance to really see what he can do," Richt said of the highly touted Green. "But there's no reason to believe he's anything less than we expected."

Back-up quarterback Joe Cox missed practice Wednesday with elbow soreness, while safety John Knox sat out after what Richt termed dehydration.

"I think he lost 11 pounds after one practice, and he just didn't replenish quite as quick as you'd like, and he just was feeling bad," Richt said.
