Backup FB spot up for grabs for first week

ATHENS - With injured fullback Brannan Southerland out for at least the first three games and third-stringer Fred Munzenmaier serving a suspension, depth at the fullback position has been a concern for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Shaun Chapas will get the starting nod when Georgia opens its season against Georgia Southern, but the role of backup will be between sophomore Justin Fields and converted linebacker Benjamin Boyd.

"Fields has done a better job than Boyd to this point," head coach Richt said, "although both of them are learning at a good pace. Fields has done a better job of not so much catching on but putting the mental and the physical part together."

Richt said he has several offensive schemes that would allow the Bulldogs to run without a fullback, but he was unsure how often those plays would be used. While he said the two reserves had some work left to do, however, he said both would be ready to play if called upon.

"If Chapas were to get hurt, we would still play one of those two guys, if not both," Richt said. "We're comfortable enough to put them in the game."
