Dawgs' Backup RB still up in the air

ATHENS – One of the closest battles in camp this year has been for a job that might not offer too much action regardless of who gets the gig.

The chance to back up star running back Knowshon Moreno has been prompted an on-going competition between redshirt freshman Caleb King and a group of true freshmen, including 17-year-old Richard Samuel.

King spent a good portion of camp nursing an injury, while Samuel quickly impressed coaches, making the No. 2 running back job up for grabs.

Head coach Mark Richt said not much has been determined on that front still, but both players will see the field Saturday.

"Richard Samuel and Caleb, I would think will both get reps," Richt said. "Richard and Caleb are definitely the front runners for the next reps (after Moreno), and I can't say who will be the first one to get the carries. Those are the two who will get the most carries after Knowshon."

That still leaves freshmen Dontavius Jackson and Carlton Thomas, who Richt said may see some action, too. Thomas' case is made a bit stronger because he could also work as a punt returner, but Richt said no final decisions have been made there either.

"I hope Dontavius and Carlton will both get reps, too," Richt said. "We have not discounted them from carrying the ball here and there. … All those tailbacks are still in the running to play as true freshmen."
