Southern Football Bowl Projections Week 4

The upset weekend and NC State's Gator Bowl bid, has the ACC's bowl situation cloudy. SEC West teams, along with Tennessee, are scrambling for the best possible bowl. And Miami tries to just keep winning.

Team by team breakdown of bowl chances

Florida State – with another ACC title locked up, Florida State can do no worse than the BCS. After losing 4 games already this season, I don't think that Florida State deserves a New Year's bowl game, what did they do to deserve a BCS bowl. Still, the Orange, the Big East and ACC's home bowl, will take Notre Dame no matter what. And because they don't want to see a rematch, or a 4 loss team, the Orange will allow Florida State to play the SEC champ in the Sugar.

Projection: SUGAR BOWL
Opponent: GEORGIA

Maryland – the Terps would probably be the ACC's representative in the BCS had they not lost to Virginia last Saturday. Now the Terps have been jumped over by NC State for the Gator Bowl bid. It looks like Maryland will be headed to Atlanta and the Peach Bowl.

Projection: PEACH BOWL

Georgia Tech – a win over Georgia will keep Tech in the South for the holidays. But a loss to the Dawgs will likely mean that the Jackets will play in the Seattle Bowl for the 2nd straight season.

Projection: SEATTLE BOWL
Opponent: OREGON

Virginia – the Cavs have the chance to slip into the Peach Bowl, but need to beat Virginia Tech and hope that Maryland loses to Wake Forest. The Tangerine looks like the venue for the Wahoos.

Opponent: TEXAS A&M

Clemson – the Tangerine Bowl had 3 representatives in the press box at Clemson's win over South Carolina last Saturday. However, the Tigers will likely slip to the Continental Tire Bowl because of all of the ACC upsets last weekend.

Projection: TIRE BOWL

NC State – the Wolfpack is the first team in the South to accept a bowl invitation. They will be playing in the Gator Bowl.

Likely Opponent: PITT
Wake Forest – no bowl spot seems open for Wake Forest. However, should Ole Miss lose to Mississippi State or if Iowa is taken in the BCS, there is a possibility that Wake Forest could go to a bowl game after all. But they probably need a win over Maryland.

Projection: NONE
Opponent: NONE

Georgia – the Dawgs will be playing on New Year's for the 3rd time in six seasons, but where? Georgia has a paper thin shot at the Fiesta Bowl. However, the Sugar or Citrus Bowls seem more likely. Georgia's bowl situation affects the whole SEC. But for the Dawgs the math is easy. Win the SEC title game and go to the Sugar; lose and head to the Citrus.

Projection: SUGAR BOWL

Florida – while it is possible that Florida could slip all the way to the Outback Bowl, that is not likely. Georgia would have to lose in Atlanta against either LSU or Arkansas; or the Tigers or Hogs would have to replace the reptiles in Orlando. Neither scenario seems likely, so the Gators appear headed for the Citrus.

Projection: CITRUS BOWL
Opponent: PENN STATE

Miami – the Canes simply have to win out in order to play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. One loss sends them to the Orange Bowl and screws the BCS up so bad that a playoff would likely be the next step in college football.

Projection: FIESTA BOWL
Opponent: OHIO STATE

Virginia Tech – from Fiesta to Tire Bowl in a matter of one month's time; don't think its possible? Ask Virginia Tech how they did it and find out. Now the maroon chickens likely get Clemson in Charlotte.

Projection: TIRE BOWL
Opponent: CLEMSON

Tennessee – baring a loss to Kentucky, the Big Orange herd will head south to Atlanta, but not for the SEC title game, instead to play in the Peach Bowl. Where is Steve Spurrier when you need him to make fun of Tennessee?

Projection: PEACH BOWL
Opponent: MARYLAND

Auburn – the Tigers, along with the loser of this week's Arkansas-LSU match up are in a bit of a bowl quandary. These three teams will fill the Cotton, Outback, and Music City Bowls (that is unless Kentucky beats Tennessee or LSU or Arkansas wins the SEC title). But placing them is going to be a difficult thing to do. I think that Auburn will end up in the Outback Bowl because they are much closer to Florida than the other two.

Projection: OUTBACK BOWL
Opponent: MICHIGAN

Arkansas – the Hogs play two games in the next two weeks that will determine if they will be going as high as the Sugar Bowl or as low as the Music City Bowl. I have no clue what will happen, but will stick the Hogs in the Cotton for the time being. If they lose to LSU, they will drop to the Music City.

Projection: COTTON BOWL
Opponent: COLORADO

Ole Miss – a win against Mississippi State gets Ole Miss into the Independence Bowl. A loss means that Ole Miss will sit at home for the holidays again, and that Wake Forest will probably go bowling.

Opponent: NEBRASKA

LSU – with one win LSU can try and defend its SEC crown. Without it, they are looking at the Music City Bowl. A loss in the title game to Georgia would mean the Cotton Bowl. For the time being, they will fill the Music City Bowl slot.
