Football Team gets 3.148 GPA

ATHENS - 79 University of Georgia football student-athletes, including 20 freshmen, posted a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for summer semester, according to figures released by the University of Georgia Athletic Association Saturday. Overall, the team posted a GPA of 3.148 for the summer.

In addition, 22 members of the Georgia football team were named to the Dean's List with one Presidential Scholar. To be named a Presidential Scholar, students must have a grade point average of 4.00, earn at least nine hours with a minimum of six hours in courses graded A-F (numbered 1000 or higher) and receive no unsatisfactory or incomplete grades.

Students who are not named a Presidential Scholar are named to the Dean's List with a grade point average of at least 3.50, six hours earned, no grades below a B (3.0), no unsatisfactory grades and no incomplete grades.

Head coach Mark Richt also announced Saturday that junior Casey Nickels has been awarded a scholarship for the 2009 season. Nickels, a 6-4, 274-pound offensive tackle from Tignall, Ga., was named Most Improved Offensive Lineman and Outstanding Walk On for offense at the conclusion of spring drills. He was a member of the scout team in 2006 and 2007, and appeared in one game last season. Nickels was a member of the 2008 SEC Academic Honor Roll and Director's Honor Roll for fall semester.
