"He has speed and agility and a confidence about him that we wanted to tap into," head coach Mark Richt said. "We knew he was going to play some defense, so it wasn't like we were worried about whether he was going to redshirt or not."
Smith said he was pleased with his opening performance, although none of his offensive touches went for big plays. His lone reception went for three yards and he tallied 11 more on three carries.
But rather than lament the short gains, quarterback Joe Cox said he's excited to see what more Smith can offer as the season progresses.
"I wouldn't be surprised if as the season goes along we give him more and more instead of just keeping it to a couple of plays," Cox said. "We wanted to get him used to it and see what he could do, and he can definitely help us on offense."
