Owens Named to AFCA Good Works Team

ATHENS - Jeff Owens has been named to the 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance and the American Football Coaches Association announced on Tuesday. Owens, a senior defensive tackle from Sunrise, Fla., is one of just 11 players in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) to receive the honor.

"I'm very proud of Jeff," head coach Mark Richt said. "There are only 11 (FBS) players in the country who receive that honor, and it's wonderful that Jeffrey is one of them. I've always been impressed with Jeff's sense of community. I know that's something he takes great pride in. It's tremendous for others to see that in him as well. He's a great representative of our football program and the University of Georgia, and he's someone everyone in the Bulldog Nation should be proud of."

Owens is Georgia's nation-leading 12th Good Works honoree since the team's inception in 1992. St. Thomas (Minn.) also has had a dozen players chosen.

Highlights of Owens' community service efforts include volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls Club of Athens, the SEC Together We Can Food Drive and HERO for a Day. He also has visited Camp Sunshine, Egleston Children's Hosptial and St. Mary's Hospital and has taken part in numerous additional service projects with his fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma.
