Georgia adds #2 for Class of '04

Charles Johnson is already Georgia's 2nd public commitment for the class of '04. Find out more about him:

Charles Johnson knew where he wanted to go early, and when the situation presented itself, he jumped on an offer from the home state Georgia Bulldogs.

"He committed to Georgia last week," said Hawkinsville Head Coach Lee Campbell. "We called Coach Martinez, and he got us on the phone with Coach Richt, and we told them that Charles was committing to Georgia."

What kind of a player is Georgia getting in Johnson? His coach doesn't have enough good things to say about him.

"They're recruiting him to play defensive end, but shoot, he played about everything for us last year. He scored touchdowns on an 80 yard kickoff return, an 80 yard reception, interception and fumble returns, and rushing of course. He scored touchdowns just about every way possible for us. He rushed for 500 yards behind one of our 2,000 yard rushers in Elijah Clark. He can do it all."

Why such an early commitment?

"Georgia was really the first one on him. Georgia Tech had said that Chan Gailey wanted to meet him to give him an offer. He always wanted to go to Georgia, so when they offered there wasn't any hesitating. I asked him before he committed 'Charles, what happens when Miami and FSU come along later?', and he said 'Coach, I want to go to Georgia.' So he went ahead and committed, and if I was in his shoes and got an offer from my favorite school, I'd go ahead and take it too."

According to Coach Campbell, Johnson is up to 240 pounds from his playing weight of 225 last fall, and he hasn't lost a step. Johnson is a versatile athlete that is going to be an exciting player to watch again this year.

Johnson joins A.J. Bryant as Georgia's second public commitment for the class of 2004.
