ATHENS, Ga. ---- University of Georgia Director of Athletics Vince Dooley announced today that he will not renew the contract of assistant men's basketball coach Jim Harrick Jr., who remains under suspension with pay due to an ongoing investigation of alleged improprieties
involving the men's basketball program.
Dooley said Harrick Jr. is an "at will" employee and, as such, serves at the pleasure of the athletic director. The contract expires June 30, 2003.
Dr. Arnett C. Mace Jr., interim senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, said he has issued a letter of reprimand to Dr. Paul G. Schempp, head of the Physical Education and Sports Studies department.
"The University's internal procedures were not followed in assigning faculty to the particular course which is the focus of the current investigation," Mace said. "Professor Schempp is officially reprimanded for allowing that to happen." The letter of reprimand becomes a permanent part of Schempp's personnel file.
University President Michael F. Adams said, "I have been kept fully informed of the progress of the investigation and support the appropriate actions taken today by the Athletic Director and the Provost."
The University's investigation in cooperation with the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA is continuing.
