A&M Decision Looms for SEC

ATHENS – The madness that is conference expansion has not yet touched the SEC - not yet...

But in due time it might. Several reports from the Lonestar State have Texas A&M very interested in the SEC. That is at odds with what many had considered the Aggies' impending move to the Pac Ten with Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The SEC has been quiet – according to one Georgia official – on purpose. The feeling is that the SEC hasn't needed to expand and won't necessarily expand unless the situation is right, and it seems clear that Texas A&M is the right situation.

From a Georgia perspective there are many different scenarios to run through… all of them are fluid (by the time I finish writing this article everything may have changed once more).

1. Texas A&M does not come to the SEC in the coming two weeks:

If that's the case then SEC expansion seems very unlikely. The SEC is not going to expand unless they feel like they have to, or if there is an opportunity they cannot pass up (like entering a new market that's as big as the Houston area).

I have heard all sorts of conjecture about how the SEC might go after Miami, Florida State, Clemson and Virginia Tech. While I don't discount that scenario could happen in some form in the future, I don't think it will happen in the near future as there is no rush to expand the SEC for programs who will be available any time in the future. Miami pledged its allegiance to the ACC earlier this week, but I get the feeling – like the Big 12 schools who said the same thing – that is only window dressing. If the SEC came calling Miami, and almost any other non-Tobacco Road ACC school would follow. That's what I believe, and that's what the SEC believes, which is the reason they have not been proactive. If the SEC wants to expand just to expand they could easily do so at any time… therefore there is absolutely no rush.

With Texas A&M figuring out its future in the next few days, however, the SEC has to be on alert to make a move. But taking just A&M might work in the short term.

2. Texas A&M comes to the SEC in the coming two weeks without a partner:

This is where things can get a little complicated. It seems like the SEC would prefer to be limited as it relates to expansion. Texas is not coming to the SEC… at least it seems like that is very, very unlikely (and it seems they are poised to take a Pac Ten invitation on Tuesday). The SEC could certainly just take Texas A&M in the coming days and sit to wait and see what their options are after that.

The Aggies could leave the Big 12 – letting the SEC know that they will be available after the final Big 12 season, which looks like 2011. In the meantime, the SEC could (and recruiting junkies will love this one) slow play the likes of Virginia Tech and Miami to see if they can wrestle Texas or Oklahoma away from the new Pac 16-ish if a new TV deal is not what the schools like. After all, the SEC has its deal… the Pac 16ish doesn't – so there is a lot of assuming going on here.

In the meantime newer contracts would be worked out for TV predicated on the SEC's expansion into the Texas (Houston specifically) market. All the while the SEC will have the ability to negotiate with one new member, perhaps Miami, perhaps Virginia Tech… perhaps someone else.

Just adding Texas A&M alone would not necessarily hurt the SEC… for the time being. Remember that Arkansas joined the SEC before South Carolina did in 1990..

3. Texas A&M comes to the SEC in the coming two weeks with a partner from the Big 12

That partner would almost certainly be Oklahoma, but it could be Missouri or Texas… but that's sort of crazy talk. If A&M brought someone with them (and its always possible Texas could come along, but that seems very, very unlikely) then the divisions of the SEC would have to shift… likely leaving Auburn in the middle of the new geography of the SEC.

The Tigers would probably have to move over to the SEC East, which would be a pretty good thing for Georgia because the Dawgs and Tigers play once a year every year now anyway. But the shift of the Tigers would screw some things up…

"New" SEC East
Auburn (Alabama)
Florida (LSU)
Georgia (Needs a cross-over partner/Ole Miss?)
Kentucky (State)
South Carolina (Arkansas)
Tennessee (Needs a cross-over partner/Arkansas?)
Vanderbilt (Ole Miss)

"New" SEC West
Alabama (Auburn)
Arkansas (South Carolina)
LSU (Florida)
Ole Miss (Vanderbilt)
Mississippi State (Kentucky)
Texas A&M (Needs a cross-over partner/?????)
Mystery Big 12 School (Needs a cross-over partner/?????)

This shift is one of the major reasons why I don't think the SEC will move to 16 teams. Four major members of the SEC – Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee – are not going to be happy about being in the same division. Those are probably the big power brokers in the SEC, and it seems unlikely that they would want to beat one another up every single season. Alabama will want to stay in the West… and Georgia and Florida, specifically, will be happy to see them stay over there.

Also, with all of this proposed expansion… 14 teams probably means nine conference games in football, and 18 in basketball – 16 teams assures it, but, again, I don't think we are headed down that path – not right now anyway.

The nine-game SEC season would bring into question teams like Georgia playing Clemson, Oregon, Louisville and others like them in out-of-conference matchups. I don't think Georgia and Tech will ever stop playing one another in football, but any expansion will probably knock down Georgia playing Colorado-like teams any time in the near future.

4. Texas A&M comes to the SEC in the coming week with a partner from outside of the Big 12

This is a situation that would be ideal for SEC schedule makers. If A&M came in from the west and Virginia Tech or Miami or someone else came in from the east things would set up in a simple way: A&M is in the West… the other team is in the East; the SEC goes to a nine-team schedule with A&M and the other team being cross-over foes.

Other points:

As it relates to Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech: Florida, probably, is going to fight the addition of either of the two other Florida schools coming into the SEC for recruiting reasons. But the Gators, like Georgia or South Carolina with Tech or Clemson, could not prevent the Canes and Noles from coming in by themselves. The SEC must have approval of 75% of its members… or 9 of 12. I am not sure if Texas A&M came in if that means the SEC would then need more or not or what, or if A&M would get a vote at that point… my guess is that they would.

Still, it seems right now that the focus of the rumbling is with Miami, Oklahoma or Virginia Tech. Those schools would bring new markets into the SEC even though the markets would be smaller than the addition of Texas A&M. Florida State's market overlaps Florida's – just the same way Carolina and Clemson overlap and Tech and Georgia do, too. Miami is really not an SEC market, but the Gators might fight that one hard. Usually when Miami is great that hurts Florida.

Expansion as it relates to Texas A&M is going to move fast. There are some rumblings about the Aggies getting an ultimatum from the other four schools involved in the move to the Pac Ten. My guess is that we will know if A&M is with the SEC by this time in two weeks… not much further than that at all. The Big 12 no longer exists and A&M is going to either go to the SEC or the Pac Ten. Baylor, Kansas and Missouri will be applying pressure to take A&M's spot, so the clock is ticking on all of this. Meanwhile the SEC is sitting pretty with TV contract to be renegotiated with one of the top markets in the country coming along.
