Quick Hitters from Dawg Night

Georgia's Dawg Night was a big success... read more about the action in the report inside.

I drove home for 2.5 hours last night after the camp and talked to a lot of high school coaches and prospects. I am on my way to Auburn now, but here are some quick recruiting notes from my telephone conversations...

- Gabe Wright: He had a GREAT visit to UGA and his family and girlfriend really liked it. I talked to his girlfriend and asked her where she wanted Gabe to go, she said, "you know Georgia Chad, but I do want to see Auburn too. I love Coach Richt." Wright had a good time and Alabama has slid down his list and Auburn and Georgia are his top two. He visits Auburn on Monday and I could see him naming UGA as his true leader that night when I do an update recapping all of his visits.

- Isaiah Crowell hung out with Jarvis Jones a lot over the last couple of days and he had a good time at UGA. He told me that Jarvis being there helps Georgia "a lot" because he knows Jarvis will tell him the truth about the situation in Athens. Jarvis and I talked a lot last night and he said he feels "at home" at Georgia and he really likes the people. It is only Georgia and Alabama on Crowell's list. He will list FSU, Clemson, and UM, but he is going to be in red and black or crimson on the next level.

- 2012 OL John Theus was the TOP OVERALL player in Athens Saturday for me. I will do an official story on that early next week, but he was so impressive. There is nothing not to like about this kid - I saw Mark Richt take a knee and watch John for about 5-6 reps and just shake his head when he went 5-0 and won each battle including 2 against Jordan Jenkins. Theus is the complete Off. Tackle and just showed me that I need to make sure he is a Scout100 member in 2012. He has fire, he has feet, he has size, and he has strength. He is a future NFL OT if all goes his way.

- Travis Blanks really likes Georgia and was very excited about his offer. I talked to him and his head coach as they drove back to Tallahassee late last night and Blanks likes Athens, he likes Lakatos, and he likes Richt. Richt is still well respected in Tallahassee, so that could help UGA here. Blanks is an elite 2012 DB that will likely play free safety in college, but he could be a big corner too possibly.

- James Wilder had a very good visit in Athens. He got there at 6am Thursday morning and he liked what he saw. The coaches, the players, and the town showed him a very good time and it will likely come down to Florida and Georgia with FSU in third. He still mentions a summer decision, but he is not 100 percent sure of just when that will be.

- Geno Smith got the offer he wanted and UGA is in the lead. He does not say that on the record in the interview you will see on Scout, but trust me, UGA leads here. I talked to his mother a lot too and she loves the staff and atmosphere in Athens.

- UGA is getting a big-time tackle in DeBell. IMO, Xzavier Ward (who was in Athens) is off UGA's board and Brandon Shell is the only OL they would take right now. DeBell is the perfect left tackle while Dantzler is the perfect right tackle. DeBell has to work on his technique (mainly pass pro) and add some weight, but he has the ideal frame coaches covet in an elite tackle. He is athletic, he is intense, he likes to learn, and I still can't believe the big three in FLA did not offer him. When I asked his mother if he will take any other visits last night, she said, "No, he is not going anywhere, he is committed to Georgia."

- The UGA commitments are very tight. They are ALWAYS together and Corey Moore showed up late and he jumped right in the group like he had been there all night. Moore is working on Xzavier Dickson (who UGA wants BAD) and Chris Mayes (who showed up with Moore late last night). The commits are like brothers and that is something nice to see.

- As soon as Chris Mayes arrived, Rodney Garner went to his side and never left it. Coach Todd Grantham and Mark Richt joined Garner to work Mayes, but he always had a coach beside him until they left the practice field. Mayes is SO athletic, but so raw. He would not help UGA on the DL for a couple of years really imo, but he has a very high ceiling because he is so athletic and so raw. He is ready to be coached up. One of my old football coaches coaches him at Spalding, but he does not get a lot of one on one coaching at DT. Garner could make him a major contributor imo. He has the size, athleticism, motor, and potential.

- C.J. Curry lit it up again in Athens. He spent a couple of days at the camp in June and then was back at the Mark Richt Camp as well. He knew the offer from UGA was coming before the camp - it would not surprise me to see Curry be the first 2012 commitment for UGA. He and his family LOVE Georgia. I do not expect that to show in the interviews he does, but I have known his dad for a long time and he is a Bulldog, so that helps UGA with his son.

- Reuben Foster and Johnny O'Neal got a lot of love from Warren Belin and both have interest in the Dawgs. I talked to Johnny's father a long time and Johnny likes the Dawgs. His dad would love for him to stay close and Foster's coach, George Brewer said, "Reuben likes UGA and he is going to like them more in the future" laughing when I was talking to them. There is still a long time to go with each of these young men, but it is evident that they are going to be and already are special.
