The Credit They Deserve

ATHENS – Todd Hartley's alarm clock jolts him from sleep-mode at 5 a.m.

Five minutes, and one snooze button later, he jumps out of bed, gets dressed and races to the Butts-Mehre athletic complex.

As a Georgia graduate assistant, Hartley's days start before the sun comes up, and never end before the moon takes over as the guiding officer in the sky.

By 6:30 he's already run 14 laps around the Spec Towns track. He jogs one more and walks another.

After a quick shower and shave, Hartley spends at least an hour on homework for his graduate program in adult education.

Once his personal tasks are completed, Hartley then tucks in his collared shirt, emblazoned with the famed bold, black "G" to signify the beginning of his football responsibilities.

"Everything all centers around practice for that day," Hartley said. "The big event for the day is practice, so you're totally thinking about, ‘What can I do to get ready for practice so it runs smoothly?'"

Add in the expected arrival of Hartley's and wife Jessica's first child in November, and understanding the meaning of time management and accountability demands even greater attention.

This is what being a football graduate assistant means: long hours, little pay, increasingly filled-to-the-max schedules and a muddling of the priority pecking order.

But with great tests come great rewards.

Hartley has been chasing his coaching dream since he was a freshman in college. Nick Jones, another current graduate assistant, has a contrasting tale.

Despite how they each arrived to here and now, both Jones and Hartley, along with Mitch Doolittle and Brad Hutcherson, may not always get the deserved credit from outside the program for the integral role they play on a day-to-day basis.

But those working inside the walls of Butt-Mehre respect what each assistant does.

"They're critical for what we do," said Georgia defensive line coach Rodney Garner. "They do an outstanding job with breaking down opponents with the film preparations, scouting reports, you know, organizing the scout teams. You couldn't do it without them. They've got to do all that grunt work. Those guys work their butts off."

Each morning is filled with film sessions and practice preparation. Just before noon, coach Mark Richt holds his staff meeting.

"We go to that, and that sets the tone for the day with what we're doing at practice," Hartley said. "After that we grab a quick bite to eat. They bring our meal to Butts-Mehre so we don't leave. We eat and then we're constantly getting film ready to show for meetings that day."

Those meetings include debriefing the players for the day's practice mission statement and goals. They also mean extensive groundwork so Georgia's full-time coaches know every single detail of each rotation in each drill that day.

Practice usually takes a couple hours, customarily ending around six or seven p.m.

Then it's another quick shower, hurried meal and retreat to film study.

"We watch with the coaches and take notes," Hartley said. "After that, if there is time we finish up anything that we have to do as far as opponent stuff."

All in a day's work – and the reward for logging a grueling 15-hour day is the painful sound of the alarm clock pestering again the next morning.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

"Those guys are incredibly valuable to what we do," said secondary coach Scott Lakatos. "Ever since we got here they have been unbelievable as far as making sure we're in the right spots and keeping us up to date with players and who was who on each rep. From a football standpoint, those guys have been really working to make themselves better coaches."

Jones, who started 32 consecutive games for Georgia and was second-team All-SEC as a senior in 2006, acknowledges the grind. But he's quick to establish he loves what the grind entails.

"Oh yeah, I love it," he said. "I love football, and I have a passion for it. So I love putting in all the hours for it because I actually love doing the work."

After bouncing around a few training camps in the NFL for a couple of seasons, Jones settled in as an insurance agent on the "outside". Although he loved interacting with people in sales, the itch to coach wouldn't go away.

Jones began corresponding with Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who both encouraged him to pursue a position as a graduate assistant.

A spot on Georgia's staff opened up in April, and Jones interviewed for the job, which seemed to be his from the get-go.

"Wow, I mean I was a player here and did everything here," Jones said. "Seeing it from a different angle, the ins-and-outs of coaching and practice, was a big thing for me. There is a lot that goes into one day and one practice. There's a lot that goes into it that players don't see. I see that part of it, and it's interesting. I've learned a lot more than when I was playing here. There is some carry-over from being a player. The scheme is still close to the same, but for the most part it was a new experience for me."

Current offensive linemen Chris Davis and Josh Davis were true freshmen taking a redshirt when Jones was a senior, evidencing Jones' age in relation to whom he currently instructs.

The advantage for Jones on the practice field – doubling also as his asset to offensive line coach Stacey Searels – is his actual experience in performing the tasks he now expects the players he's coaching to perform.

What that boils down to is unmistakable authority.

"It adds a little credibility that he's been through what we've been through," senior tackle Clint Boling said. "He's been through mat drills and everything. He's been through the same amount of work we have. That definitely helps."

Hartley's road to esteemed graduate assistant status wasn't paved and made smooth by NFL camp experience.

In fact, he didn't play football in college.

"I really feel like – and maybe I'm wrong – but I feel like there are two separate types of people out there," Hartley said. "There are coaches who have played and coaches who didn't play. There are a lot more in the fraternity that did play. I really feel like that kind of hurts me a little bit. But I know that if I can overcome that with hard work, and if I can get a recommendation from people like Coach Richt, along with my body of work I can land the job I want to land."

The lack of playing experience in Hartley's background is just another motivating factor that helps drag him out of bed so early each morning.

Initially enrolled at Georgia in pre-journalism, Hartley intended to enter the broadcasting side of the sports industry.

But potential work as a member of the media didn't give him the chance to be as close to the action as he wanted.

Changing his entire life plan, Hartley threw himself headlong into the chase to become a college coach. Beginning with the basketball team as a student assistant, he quickly made his way to his intended destination: the football field.

"I've been after it ever since," he said. "I went all out. I put all my chips in. I really have been blessed. Like I said, coming where I came from – not playing – I really caught some lucky breaks along the way."

Hartley joined the staff under the guidance of then-tight ends coach Dave Johnson. In 2008, Johnson left for West Virginia and Hartley followed.

Hartley returned to Georgia before the beginning of last season, switching to the defensive side-of-the-ball, working under former coordinator Willie Martinez.

"Last year we worked some late hours," Hartley said. "We were burning the candle wax last year. It's kind of like beating your head against the wall a little bit."

While last season's defensive effort was considered a disappointment by most, Hartley used the time to his upmost advantage.

He worked alongside Martinez every single practice. And he was essential in preparing the defense for the Independence Bowl, when Garner was the only full time assistant left on the staff.

"Just being around him, he always motivates me," said safety Bacarri Rambo of Hartley. "He's hyper and happy to be here. He's doing a very good job with us. He's teaching us to be the very best we can be. He always comes to me and tells me, ‘you don't want to be average. You want to be great.' He tells me things like that to motivate me. That's why I love him so much. I care for him like a big brother."

Now Hartley is commonly seen leading Georgia's safeties by himself at practice. There are 18 members of Lakatos' secondary, and teaching cornerbacks and safeties together isn't practical or efficient.

"As a young coach, they just want the chance to coach," Lakatos said. "They're more than valuable for me because there are certain things corners do that safeties don't do at all and vice versa. It's nice to have Todd to go work on things that are unique to safeties, and I can take the corners and work on things that are unique to them."

Added Rambo: "If I have a question in the film room I can talk to coach Lakatos, but the majority of the time I go to Hartley. When Coach Lakatos tells me things sometimes I might not understand. So I go to Coach Hartley to break it down for me and give me the information in a way that I understand. Then I spread that on to the younger guys to let them know. I always feel comfortable having him to talk to about on-the-field problems, off-the-field problems, family problems or academic problems. He's like my big brother I always wanted. I've got a big brother, but he's a big brother that I see everyday."

Hartley has used his work ethic and studying to cancel out the fact he didn't play in college. After all, he was a quarterback in high school and a quick look back on, "those days," suggests Hartley was always destined to lead others.

"I was a quarterback, but all of my friends always called me coach," he said. "I was always coaching everybody and they'd say, ‘you're going to be a good coach one day.'"

So where do the likes of Jones and Hartley go from here?

The goal is always to find a full-time coaching gig. But the competition is stacked full of candidates all across the college landscape that offer a similar background and experience.

"I understand the steps you have to take as a young coach trying to earn your way to being a full-time assistant," said linebackers coach Warren Belin. "The biggest thing is being patient and understanding that you're going to find the right place at the right time. The opportunities of meeting people in this profession; networking is very, very big. And if you can prove yourself on-the-field and off-the-field and show you know the trade of coaching a position or a particular scheme – that lets the full-time coaches in the hiring position that you're ready."

"I'm looking. You always look," Hartley admitted. "It's always in the back of your mind, but it can't be all that you think about. If it is, it will drive you crazy and you won't do a good job."

Until a full-time job presents itself, the alarm clock will still gong at five a.m. The meals will still be rushed and the meetings will only drag on longer as the responsibility remains enormous.

But the focus remains the same.

"Hopefully I can continue my little streak of getting here at 5:30 to exercise," Hartley said. "Hopefully I can keep that up."

\"I was a quarterback, but all of my friends always called me coach,\" he said. \"I was always coaching everybody and they'd say, ‘you're going to be a good coach one day.'\"

So where do the likes of Jones and Hartley go from here?

The goal is always to find a full-time coaching gig. But the competition is stacked full of candidates all across the college landscape that offer a similar background and experience.

\"I understand the steps you have to take as a young coach trying to earn your way to being a full-time assistant,\" said linebackers coach Warren Belin. \"The biggest thing is being patient and understanding that you're going to find the right place at the right time. The opportunities of meeting people in this profession; networking is very, very big. And if you can prove yourself on-the-field and off-the-field and show you know the trade of coaching a position or a particular scheme – that lets the full-time coaches in the hiring position that you're ready.\"

\"I'm looking. You always look,\" Hartley admitted. \"It's always in the back of your mind, but it can't be all that you think about. If it is, it will drive you crazy and you won't do a good job.\"

Until a full-time job presents itself, the alarm clock will still gong at five a.m. The meals will still be rushed and the meetings will only drag on longer as the responsibility remains enormous.

But the focus remains the same.

\"Hopefully I can continue my little streak of getting here at 5:30 to exercise,\" Hartley said. \"Hopefully I can keep that up.\" ","skipOnMobile":false,"media":[],"dateOverride":"2010-08-26T07:47:00","authorOverride":"Fletcher Page","role":"Dawg Post","isPremium":true,"isHotNews":false,"isRumor":false,"syndicationFlag":true,"isClassified":true,"hotNamesLinked":true,"storyImage":"[MEDIA:756189]","mainImage":{},"thumbnailImage":"[THUMBNAIL:756189]","heroImage":{},"authorImage":"","tags":[{"id":"593","name":"Georgia"},{"id":"10028","name":"Georgia - Football"}],"nodes":["740"],"isActive":true,"inActiveAndMemberHasPublishRights":false,"createdOn":"2010-08-26T08:20:59.667","createdById":"2529143","modifiedOn":"2014-07-06T08:47:52.997","modifiedBy":"51458","imgs":[],"viewStats":[{"from":"2015-07-25T07:00:00","to":"2015-07-25T08:00:00","count":4}],"hasVideo":false,"brandUnsafe":false,"breakingNews":false},"editorsChoice":{"siteUrls":["http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1620575-legge-talks-smart-press-conference","http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1580827-uga-plans-30-2-million-practice-facility","http://georgia.scout.com/story/1620611-kirby-smart-dreamed-being-hc"],"networkUrls":["http://www.scout.com/college/penn-state/story/1734646-psu-gets-chance-to-prove-committee-wrong","http://www.scout.com/nfl/packers/story/1734711-from-boos-to-jor-dy-chants?s=143","http://www.scout.com/college/ohio-state/story/1734550-buckeyes-make-college-football-playoff","http://www.scout.com/story/1734602-bowl-game-matchups-who-s-going-where"],"topRibbonWidgets":["http://georgia.scout.com/topic/players?type=videos&start=0&category=%22Football%20Recruiting%22&classYear=%222015%22&mediaTag=%22Spotlight%20Video%22&minimumInterest=%22Verbal%22&team=%22Georgia%22"],"carouselStoryUrls":["http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1734645-dawgs-to-take-on-tcu-in-liberty-bowl","http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1734639-dawgs-fall-to-marquette-a-closer-look","http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1734458-uga-looking-pretty-strong-for-liberty-bowl","http://www.scout.com/college/georgia/story/1734164-uga-gets-massive-surprise-5-star-visitor","http://www.scout.com/college/football/recruiting/story/1733417-defensive-stars-visiting-uga-this-weekend"],"storyStreamUrls":[],"storyStreamBlacklistUrls":[],"videoStories":[{"type":"StorySummary","containerType":"StorySummary","id":"1703427","siteId":"73","isPublicSite":true,"subdomain":"recruiting","canonicalUrl":"http://recruiting.scout.com/story/1703427-jeremiah-holloman-s-upside-is-scary","shortUrl":"http://recruiting.scout.com/story/1703427-jeremiah-holloman-s-upside-is-scary","siteName":"Scout Football","forumName":"","friendlySubdomain":"Football Recruiting","title":"Jeremiah Holloman's Upside is Scary","subtitle":"","seotitle":"Newton head coach Terrence Banks breaks down new Georgia commit, four-star WR Jeremiah Holloman","caption":"","deck":"Jeremiah Holloman was not being talked about among the best this time a year ago.
