Staff Predictions: GVSU @ Michigan Tech

The #1 GVSU Lakers travel all the way up to Houghton for a showdown the surging Michigan Tech Huskies, who come in ranked at #25 in the D2 football poll and are 4-0 on the year. Here are our thoughts on the game and predictions on the outcome.

Kyle Schwerin
GVSU takes the long ride up to Houghton this week to have possibly their biggest test of the year so far, and to face probably the most productive QB they'll face this year. Short has been deadly both through the air and on the ground, and MTU has looked very impressive this year, riding a 9 game GLIAC win streak since last season.

On the flip side, while MTU has looked impressive, they've given up their fair share of points as well. That should ultimately signal their demise in this week's game as the GVSU first string defense should step up to the challenge in probably their first full game of action on the year, while the GVSU offense exploits the MTU defense as teams have done the whole season.

GVSU - 45 MTU - 24

This will certainly be a good early season barometer for just where this Laker team is. But even though Tech has had some big wins of late, their defense has had problems stopping people and this is the best offense they will have faced.

Husky QB Steve Short has been on a tear, but to me, the strength of the GV defense is the back seven and passing on the Lakers is no easy task. Furthermore, after some initial success on the ground last week, Findlay's rushing attack really had the screws tightened on them later in the game. All that should add up to a fairly decisive GV victory.

GVSU - 48 MTU - 17
