GVSU Hosts Explosive Wideout

GVSU has had a lot of success reeling in top flight skill position talent lately. That looks like it will continue this year as the Lakers are the top of the list for several of Michigan's top receivers. One of those talented pass catchers took a trip to Allendale last week and GVReport got the scoop on things shook out.

The GVReport staff has been fortunate enough to see Saline WR Sam Burchyett on several occasions and never has the 6'2 speedster disappointed. This season has been no different as he has raced out to a fast start, as Saline, minus Vince Helmuth (now at Michigan) is passing the ball more.

"Currently he is leading the league and area in receptions, yards and TDs," said Sam's father, Mike Burchyett, "He has 24 receptions for 436 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also leads area with 6 kickoff returns for 232 yards and a TD (38.67/return)."

Over the past three games, Burchyett has improved steadily. His has gone over 100 yards and scored in his last three games and also made a highlight reel worthy one-handed grab against Bedford. Opposing teams have been gearing up to stop #6, but to little avail.

"Teams have been trying to defend Sam with a safety over the top," Mr. Burchyett said, "but it has not worked yet."

With that kind of production and track star speed (4.37 in the forty yard dash), it is no surprise that Sam is firmly on the radar of FBS (Division 1) teams. Still, he attended GVSU's camp this summer and his recent visit has put the Lakers right in the thick of things.

"Sam's visit to GVSU went great," his father reported, " He talked with all the coaches but spent most of the trip with Coach Pawlowski who is the recruiting coordinator for the Saline area. Sam's impression of GVSU is very positive and he loves the new indoor facility. Coach Martin's comments that compared MAC programs' postseasons to the recent GVSU runs and championships has given him something to think about."

With the Hornets enjoying a good season and the many schools that are still in contact with him, the Lakers like all the other schools recruiting Sam Burchyett will have to wait it out just a while longer.

"Sam continues to be contacted by colleges weekly but will not make any decisions until after the season. It is shaping up to be an interesting and fun ride."
