Reed City's Jones Commits to GVSU

Grand Valley is putting together quite the early recruiting class for 2009. Already with three instate commits under their belt, the Lakers hauled in their fourth this week when Reed City center Corey Jones visited Allendale and committed to the GVSU.

Everything seemed to point to Allendale for Corey Jones. The 6'10 center from Reed City (MI) committed to play basketball for Grand Valley this past week becoming the Lakers' fourth verbal commitment for the class of 2009.

"We went for an official visit two weeks ago," Jones told GVReport, "I had done an unofficial before, but we went around, went to the football game, it was their homecoming. After the game they told us to go home, think about it. I did and then I called them and verbally committed."

Jones points to a number of factors as reasons he chose to become a part of the Laker Basketball program, but maybe none of which were more important than the support system he will have around him and the familiarity he already has with GVSU.

"Well, it wasn't too far away, but it wasn't too close either," he responded when asked why he chose Grand Valley, "Also, a former teammate of mine, Justin Ringler is there and Wes Trammell who I played for the Grand Rapids Storm with committed there. On my visit, I played with the guys on the team in open gym and they were fun to hang out with. I have cousins who go there and my parents' friends' kid goes there."

GVSU has quite the class already for 2009, in addition to Jones, here are the other Laker commits in brief:

Nick West - PF - Royal Oak (6'8)
Athletic and tough on the glass, West was a double-double machine last season.

Wes Trammell - PG - Jenison (5'11)
Older brother Pete plays at GV. Wes is more of a pure point who can handle and score.

Nick Carreri - SF - L'anse Creuse (6'6)
Big bodied swing man who can finish and can shoot from the outside.

Another big factor is the upward curve GV basketball is on after their Elite Eight appearance last year. That gives Jones and the other Laker commits confidence that this is much more than a football school they are coming to.

"They're ranked 3 rd in the preseason poll for Division II Coach told me, so that's really good."

Jones joins Nick West from Royal Oak as the big men GVSU has already hauled in and he is hoping that he can also lend a little versatility to the Laker frontcourt.

"For my high school I just play center because there isn't anyone else as tall as me, but for the Storm we had three people who were as tall or taller, so I actually played four positions. But usually I concentrate more on being a center."

Jones and Reed City open their season on December 3, the Lakers open with an exhibition contest at Michigan State on November 2.
