Stephens Has Great Trip to Allendale

Pontiac Northern DL Darrin Stephens is being courted by many schools in his home state. Division 1 (FBS) programs like Michigan State, CMU, EMU and others are after the talented lineman, but after a strong visit to GVSU this past weekend, might the Lakers be in the lead?

Darrin Stephens had already been to Allendale. The 6'3, 255-lb defensive lineman from Pontiac Northern camped at GVSU this past summer. Saturday, he made a return trip for GVSU's contest against Ferris State and found the experience an even bigger eye opener.

"It's a really nice school," he told GVReport, "the atmosphere was great, the crowd was big and loud. I didn't expect that from a D2 school and I really like the coaches."

The visit came just after the Husky season ended. The team missed the playoffs, but this has allowed Stephens to concentrate on narrowing his choices down. Still, he was able to finish his season on a high note.

"We got knocked out [of the playoff race] early," he said, "but we got to knock other teams out of the playoffs. We beat Oak Park (knocking the Knights from the playoffs) and i had my best game that game. I had a few tackles, a few tackles for losses, a couple sacks and I had a crucial strip that gave us the ball back, then we drove the field and scored."

A two-way starter on both the offensive and defensive line for Northern, Stephens says GVSU and the other schools after him are recruiting him as a defensive tackle.

He has drawn interest from Wayne State, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan in addition to the Lakers. While he has until February's signing day to make his choice, he already has a plan for finishing up the recruiting process, and while a commitment doesn't appear to be coming too soon, there is definitely one school at the top right now.

"Grand Valley is my #1 school right now," Stephens reported, "I'm going to wait a little longer [to make a decision] because I'm waiting for my ACT and I'm going to get some more film out there."

GVReport will have that film of Stephens as well as updates on him and the other Laker recruits from now until Signing Day.
